blown coolant seals or something else?
first off i have an 88 TII.
well this weekend when i got back from a friends house and was letting my car cool down, the add coolant light came on and i shut my car of emidietly. i jumped out and poped the hood to check coolant levels and the overflow was completly empty and the rad was low. i did the coolant seal test with the low coolant in and i deffinetly saw some bubbles but ony when i just started the car. i went to the store and got some coolant, topped off the rad and over flow and started it again. no add coolant light and no bubbles. i drove it around the block and everything seemd ok. the next day i went to test it again and within 3 to 5 min of the warm up process it started pushing coolant into the overflow. it stopped right at the full line on the over flow and when i walked around the car to turn it off i noticed a puddle of coolant on the ground. after some poking around i pretty much concluded that the coolant was coming from some where near the lower intake manifold. im aware that there are coolent seals in there what do u guys think? i think my best option would be a rebuild or a swap. i wouldt wana just replace the otter coolent seals and have the strenght of those put pressure on the old ones and have those go to :mad: |
From the way it sounds if its coming from the lower intake manifold it could be the hose that runs from the rear iron nipple to the throttle body and requires the intake to be taken off upper and lower cuz the nipple is below the upper intake manifold on the passenger side thats just my 2 cents cuz it sounds exactly the same as to what happened to mine. But i fixed and my add coolant light still comes on cuz i think my seals are bad now too. Good luck and i may have some pics if needed. :icon_tup:

Are you getting smoke out of the exhaust? If not, then its not the internal coolant seals. Look for a loose/cracked hose around where you see the coolant.

i dont think its the internal seals... yet. im gonna feel around again when i get some time this weekend. and no im not getting any smoke from the exhaust i dont think. i just thought it was strange that coolant was being pushed back into the overflow just during warm-up/idle. even if it is just enough to get the over flow tank to full. also if a hose did crack or blow off im concerend about where that excess pressure through the coolant system would be coming from

i asked him for em.. also the coolant only leaks out when the car is running. another reason why i think its one of the seals and not just a ruptured or loose hose

did you check your heater hose that goes from the firewall to to the engine.

yea i thought about the heater hose. it doesnt look like its leaking at all.
