Blend the FTPs rather than remove
Here is one 7 owner's way of removing the FTPs to enhance the look of his ride. Here is his original post to rec.autos.rotary...
Hi, for those interested in the 2nd Generation RX7, please critique my frontal treatment of the S4. For those of you who can't pick it, the front flasher light ports have been filled in and painted body colour. In my opinion this gives a smoother, sleeker look more akin to the first generation cars. http://www.geocities.com/lachlan_keo...Rotorized.html |
Look! He filled his "flasher light ports"...
I like the FTP lenses personally. Whoever did that did a decent job though, looks nice from the pics. |
ROXY CANT SEE !!!! SHE'S BLIND!!! AHHHHH
|
Whats the point of doing that?? I personally like the FTP lenses, and they do serve a purpose, I say just leave them alone.. But I guess if someone really wants to get rid of them, that looks like it was a nice clean job.
|
What purpose? Does anyone in the US actually Flash To Pass? More of an Autobahn type thing to me. Most of the people around here are like '' hey, what's that guy flashing his lights for? ahhyuk.." 'Course I AM in KS. :-)
Actually, blend looks good, would like to see a better closeup, but saw another car on another thread tonight w/ the same modification done. Looks decent -- another oh so subtle mod... |

i use my FTP lenses to flash to pass, but very often people dont see them anyways since they are so low. they have become my signaure way of saying "hey" to my friends when i see them on the road. or at night i will turn my lights off when i see the and hold the brights on. FC's look badass with the lights on through the FTP's

Hey! Justin! How ya been! :bigthumb:
Yeah, I use my FTPs for night driving, too. But I put a relay in by the retractor fuse so I don't have to mess around with the light controls. http://rx-7.freehosting.net/lights.htm It doesn't take long to slap together. :) |
amur there is no way your getting enough light to be safe
|
hey amur, been good.
i agree that the light from your FTP's must be rather dim. i just flip mine on when i see someone i knw, normally i driv with the real lights Justin |
Agreed. Which is why I only do this when I'm on a street that is lit by street lights. Once I get into a darkened area I hit the switch and release the pop-ups.
|
another purpose of flashing your lights is to alert on-coming traffic that there is a cop on thier side of the road coming up, this is a dying trend and not too many people know about it or do it anymore, it was however strong in the 80's, my theory is they were put there to alert the on coming traffic of police shooting radar but Mazda couldnt very well call them "smokey up ahead lenses", lol
|
the FTP lenses look damn cool, and the JDM ones have bulbs and a little different pattern on them...filled in it looks like a ford probe (ick).
|
I think it looks too much like the old supras (92 and down) too un-rexy. Unrexy is not sexy baby..........yeah
|
That is my car in the pictures.
Here in NZ "Flash to Pass" means absoultely nothing to me; I cannot imagine what application the ports could have apart from flashing when the cops are up ahead. I personally think these ports were a real abortion on Mazda's part, they really spoil the look. If they absolutely had to provide a quick flash functionality, I would have rather seen a flush piece of clear lense perhaps? My apologies for the quality of the pictures, I don't yet have a digital camera. I had to get out with the video camera and then digitise via a video capture card. The colour of the car hasn't come out, it is actually a really noce metallic green (Renault colour, believe it or not). Any thoughts on the license plate "WANKL7" I thought that was quite a good one, although it gets some funny looks (people here in NZ don't really associate the 2nd gen with rotaries, I think - only 1st gens of which there are many). Good day. |

I always use mt FTP lenses. Mainly to let other people go at stop signs or such, and occasionally on the highway when passing trucks, or flashing them to let them know they are a safe distance to merge over. I suppose a high-beam flicker would sufice though..
|
Nice pics! He did a great job!
Welcome to the group, Lachlan! Careful how much time you spend here - the Forum can be addictive. :D I should mention that I cut the backs out of both FTPs to try to let as much light through as possible. And I try to sand the inside of each lens once every few months to try to get them as clean as possible... In my book, 'every bit counts.' :) |
Is that a fiberglass bumper?
|
Good job, nice paint. But I like the FTPs
|
If you're asking me, then I don't know. Not my car -- just found in another thread. Ask Ranzo. :)
|
I use them enough to keep them, but they get yellow & hazy after 12 years.

I really like the FTP lenses, BUT it does look pretty nice. But it kinda screams Toyota though...(both the 2gen MR2 SW20 and the Toyota Supra JZA80)
