Big turbo questions
 
i am in the process of putting a holset hx50 on my 10th ann and just had a few question i cant seem to find the anwsers to. I was planning on building a custom manifold to clear the lower intake...i have seen alot of ppl running the rew intakes and it that to give more room? also has anyone has any problems with clearing the upper radiator hose?? what would be the best injector choice for this setup? any advice would help. thanks guys

You dont need to clear the manifolds if you are making a custom turbo manifold.
Also the REW lower intake will not fit the 13bt blocks. You can have the upper REW manifold and run an adapter plate like from risingrpm, but running the REW upper is not going to give much performance.

720/1600 injector setup is supportive for a hx50 for up to atleast 500hp. Some people like to go with 550 primaries to get a better idle

Stick with stock primaries, and a pair of these for secondaries.

ok just talked to my tuner....he also said to use 550 primaries and use 1680 secondaries as they are better for my $$$. next question i have is my turbo has a 5in vband on the exhaust, would running a full 3" be too small???

a 3inch is fine up to just about 450hp or so if I remember from past posts. Though, I do see some people do run a 4incher, but those are on dedicated track cars.
Unless this car is going to be a track car, 3inch is good enough.

The jump in injector size isnt really that huge if you have a standalone that can fine tune the map area of the injector transitions.

Big turbo, high boost, lots of injectant from ai (water is jus fine imo) 500 should be an easy goal.
I think you might need a big turbo tho, that turbo says it'll make 500hp but that's piston lingo, divide by 1.3 its a good 380hp.

my bnr stage 4 did 339whp and this is it compared.....im pretty sure it should reach my goal!
and yes i have a s5 rear plate

an S5 plate does not necessarily mean you have the upgraded thick casting rear iron. i have seen them on some rare series 4 blocks(possibly remans) and late model imported series 5 engines, most USDM series 5 did not have it.

its the jdm rear plate. its alot thicker that before. should i worry about the front plate as well though?

I've been readin & hearin how studs are more of a preference tho, ai should really help w/ keepin the engine from bein damaged too.

front plate isn't a common failure area. AI helps raise knock threshold beyond 18-20psi but the engine will still want to twist, a thick rear plate is the equivalent of pinning the block.

Hey, I also have a 10AE and also have a holset hx50. Mine looks to be a different variant of yours though. Are you sure that's not an hx52?

Granted I mounted my turbo a bit high, I still can use my oem rad hoses and necks. I built my manifold myself, with 2" sch40 elbows tig welded, dual 38mm gates.

Personally if it were me i would follow Elliott's (Turblown) advise and go with the ID2000's. Not only are they designed with much newer technology, that is a night and day difference in terms of spray pattern vs the 1680's, clean spray pattern is what u want in a rotary (or any car, but I feel it more prevalent in this app) as it will run smoother and "cleaner". They will be able to handle the fueling for that turbo with much lower duty cycles, which will make any injector last longer as well. And they would provide a little more room to add boost in before stepping up to a bigger primary inj. Just food for thought, I know the price might not seem worth it or justifiable right now, but trust me when u compare these to the "old timer" injectors (550/680/720/1200/1680) its a huge difference.

Something you want to think about with your turbo mani is obviously short runner vs long runner. I'm no expert on these by any means, but with a 5" V-band (I know you'll be stepping it down to 3") you'll want to have it located somewhere that can accommodate the transition. Personally i think the long runner would work better for this, there are plenty of members and vendors that can advise you correctly. I don't think you can fit that turbo and DP combo on "pre-made" mani's like the cast HKS or trust( Greddy) ones, but i Ive been wrong before. A long runner mani would also help solve your LIM problem as well.

The biggest exhaust you would need to run on this turbo is 3.5".

Good call on the custom manifold. The turbine inlet flange is pretty much a t4 divided, you just need to elongate the holes a bit in either the flange on your manifold or the turbo. Using a manifold like this with a divided flange will help spool up over a cast manifold since the 2 runners will be completely separate.

I burnt a flange on my plasma table without the bolt holes so I could drill and tap them to match the turbo.

Definitely run 4" downpipe and exh if you want to make 500whp. This is a 62mm turbo with a large exhaust housing. The only thing that will hurt running a 4" exh is going to be your ears maybe haha. The best exh on a turbo setup is no exh, so if you can tolerate the noise, go with 4".

That being said, I'm running 3" on mine to a RB rev t2 exh cause I like things quiet and only want 400-425whp

nice i just sold my rev 2 exhaust because i was worried it may be resitriced. i possibly may just do a full custom 4 in exhaust we'll see!

Im running a hx52 on a hks cast with 4in DP an if fits pretty good
