Better 13b internals
 

I have a 13b N/A engine that I want to rebuild in my auto class. The engine is in full working order so there is no reason to just take it apart. So I was thinking this would be a good chance to replace the internals of the motor. Can anyone tell me what are some good upgrades that I can make? (i.e. seals, lightweight rotors...)
I may even send it out to get some work done while it’s apart. Any help will be good and if you could give me websites to the products or services it would help.

whats ur budget? is the FIRST thing u gotta account for....

You can go with cryogenic treatment, ceramic coating, or ceramic apex seals for upgrades on the seals/housings. However, that's overkill for an N/A.

An N/A engine can last over 150k if taken care of properly with stock parts. Just make sure all of your internals are within spec.

As for other upgrades, you can go with:
oil thermo pellet shimming
porting
removing the exhaust sleeves

There's others, but it all depends on your budget.

Atkins makes solid corner seals... good upgrade.

under $100 USD should get you a pair of brand new rx8 stationary gears from mazda. good for 9000+rpm.

If your motor has the stock 3 piece seals, I would get some mazda 2 piece apex seals if you can afford them.

Since you have an 87. I would suggest finding some S5 rotors and counterweights to throw in there. If you are using the stock flywheel, find a s5 5speed flywheel and front counterweight. Otherwise if you are using an aftermarket flywheel, you will need the S5 automatic trans rear counterweight.

Does any one know where to get this stuff. What should i get from private sellers and where can i get the rest.
Also, is there no other rotor better then the s5?
And i am thinking about making this a higher reving engine, like 10,000+ rpm's or so. I read in another thread that you loose the bottom end power if you do this. Can i do this without loosing the bottem end?

I would say my budget is about $1000-$1500. If that i too low please let me know.

Unfortuneatly you're going to have to add another zero to your budget to do anything. Replacing bearings, rotor housings, and seals alone is near $2000.

Unfortunatly, thats too low. Good ceramic seals will run you ~$300 a piece, while a set of RacingBeat lightened rotors runs $2100, the cost of porting varies depending on what you are having done.
For that budget, I would say if you haven't already done so, go with a lightweight flywheel, and a good clutch. Another option is to change your rear end ratio or gear ratios. I swapped in a set of miata gears with excellent results.
What are you doing with the car, and what are you hoping to get out of it? More power, better response, etc?

I don't really have any plans for this motor. I am taking an auto class at my CC and need an engine to rebuild. I am going to drop a 13b-re engine into my car after i sell this engine. It seams like it is not going to be worth it to rebuild this motor because i don't think i will get the amount i put in to it back. It still has a good amount of life ahead of it so i think i might just sell it how it is (73,000 miles on it).
