OEM is great. "Fits OEM" or "OEM quality" is BS marketing. Even so, anything except FRAM/Quakerstate/Penzoil (same) is decent. I think one of FRAM's filters is good though, but it's not even the most expensive one so it's hard to remember. Nippon makes the OEM Mazda filters.

OEM is probably your best option, but for more cash the best at filtering are PureOne, Mobil 1, and AMS. All 3 filter equally. PureOne is restrictive and has a low capacity for storing filtered crud, while AMS is unrestrictive and high capacity. Mobil 1 is in the middle. Once a filter clogs you trigger the bypass valve, which means no more filtration. PureOne is the cheapest but if you consider filter life the most expensive one, AMS, comes out cheaper in the long run. That'd mean a filter change every 25k miles though, and you'd want a super clean oil like AMS oil to be sure it lasts that long.

Very interesting thread ... but no one has commented on the kind of filters that I use and thats the Bosch Filters. I'll take mine apart for sure next time I do an oil change to see how things are like in there unless someone knows how things are.

I tried using the quaker State once before and found something very odd, when I did my oil and filter change, taking out the filter there was a ton of oil coming out of it after taking out the drain bolt. Normally with the Bosch ones i take them out and the oil has pretty much drained right out of them.

I just punch a hole in the top of the filter to let it vent so the oil can drain out. I use to run a Mazda oil filter, but the last time I used a Wix filter. I might just stay with Wix though.

I use whatever is on sale. If I'm at Mazda, I pick up an OEM filter. If I'm at the parts store, I get whatever is on sale at the time. Generally this is Fram. They also have a nice "Sure Grip" area which makes them easy to install and remove.

And because someone will ask, I use whatever brand of oil is on sale as well.

Atkin's Oil Filters are not Mazda OEM Oil Filters, then?

Other than a Mazda dealership (There are none in my area!) what would probably be the best place to source Mazda OEM Oil Filters?

haha, yea i have used the bosch too. really, im not sure if it matters too much if you change your oil on time, ESPECIALLY if you use synthetic oil. now if you are going like 7000+ miles without a change then you better hope you use a quality filter. also, someone earlier mentioned the napa filter. these (just like carquest) are wix filters rebadged, just like napa brand oil is actually ashland (valvoline) oil. overall tho, i think that the general consensus is mazda OE filters. i think icemark once said that they have like 3 times the filter area of fram/others???
