Bent turbines

What would do this to a new turbo with only (4000k) on it?

I'll attach a pic of the turbine and the wastegate turbine.
Every second turbine on the turbo is bent while the other are fine...

The site has yet allowed me to post a pic...
post and i'll e-mail it to you

Thanks

87RX7TII 06-27-04 02:17 PM

can anybody post a pic for me

HAILERS 06-27-04 02:25 PM

Go to http://www.teamfc3s.org/ and post your picture on their Area 51 section. Then copy that location and attach it on this post/thread.

FOD bent the blades. That means a foreign object hit the blades while they were a spinning. Foreign....Object....Damage.... FOD hangs out around airplanes quite a lot. It likes to bend/ding compressor blades/turbine blades etc. It cost your local airforce big bucks each year. Other times it likes to hang in the throttle linkage and give the pilot a wet bottom. (humor)

Thanks again HAILERS!

87RX7TII 06-27-04 06:04 PM

what could and should be done about this??

It was a perfectally new rebuilt turbo... like I said maybe 4k on it...

I dont want to have to for out 4grand for a new one...

j9fd3s 06-27-04 06:12 PM

turbo ate something, hows your air filter?

87RX7TII 06-27-04 06:17 PM

I just replaced it... I went to order a new hks but the guy suggested just molding a edelbrock one into the shape..
I think it was a piece of tape the previous owner used to seal up the bottom of the TID... there is blue sealent and tape along the bottom which probably sucked through....

87RX7TII 06-27-04 07:41 PM

does this need to be immidately replaced or can it sit until I get 1g to get it rebuilt...

drago86 06-27-04 07:42 PM

Just fyi the side you call the turbine is actually called the compressor wheel, the side you call the wastegate turbine is actually called the turbine wheel.

87RX7TII 06-28-04 02:16 PM

thanks for the update.. I didnt know the difference

87RX7TII 06-28-04 02:18 PM

so does the compressor wheel need to be fixed right now? Will it take out anything else the way it is?

Rxmfn7 06-28-04 03:07 PM

I wouldnt trust it. Remember these things sping 100,000+ RPM. The compressor wheel being that much off balance could have the potential to do some damage.

87RX7TII 06-28-04 04:31 PM

i just dont have the cash to go out and buy a new turbo considering I just bought that one...
SHIT... I should probably start looking to sell it.

87RX7TII 06-28-04 04:31 PM

So pissed i needed a double post

jkrueger 06-28-04 05:26 PM

I just got mine rebuilt by Majestic Turbo. $325 new wheels and bearings.

PilotSi 06-28-04 05:43 PM

You could but just the wheel and replace it -- that looks like a stock turbo.

I have a cold side wheel if you want it.

David

87RX7TII 06-28-04 06:12 PM

Yes its stock
dont you need to buy and replace all of the gaskets inside as well??

Digi7ech 06-28-04 07:40 PM

Technically you don't need to replace anything else.

You could just unscrwe the nut ontop and put in a new compressor wheel.

Although I don't know iof you've destroyed any bearings by spinning it up with an unbalanced wheel.

I recommend to search the for sale section for some one selling a compressor/cold side.

I bought 3 hotsides before I found one in acceptable condition.

BTW it won't cost you a grand. Unless the FOD went into the engine and did something.

Think of this as your cars way of saying.
Hey I want a S5 turbo!

Search around.
My Jspecs turbo was shot.
The hotside and compressor wheels were toast.
I bought another S5 for 80 bux to get a compressor wheel then 60 for a hotside.

It then cost me $216 to get it rebuilt by www.turbosdirect.com

87RX7TII 06-29-04 07:52 AM

but i live up in canada. my money is worth crap.
that $300 you've just mentioned now jumps to around $450 for me.. and i JUST paid 550 for this turbo

87RX7TII 06-29-04 07:55 AM

how do i test the bearings?

OverDriven 06-29-04 08:00 AM

WTF...quit whining! You have a TII...if you don't have money in the bank for repairs, you shouldn't own an RX7...specially a turbo one. Jesus...find a used turbo on this forum. I've seen plenty for around $100. If you can't afford that, sell the car.

Wow....way to be a dick.

87RX7TII :

You can pick up a used good condition S4 turbo for under $150 US. I think this would be the most cost effective, and easiest alternative. Save this one, and when you have the money sent it out and have a nice hybrid tubo built for you. Im sorry to say but if you paid $550 for a stock turbo you got taken. You can get a nice S5 turbo and manifold for ~$250 US

Not trying to be a dick, bro. I did wake up in a hell of a mood today though. OK...to the original poster...my apologies, and just get a used turbo and you'll have it back on the road in no time. Just don't try to run it with the bent blades.

Dude.. get a JUNK turbo with a good compressor wheel and steal the compressor wheel, or email Bryan at BNR, he may have something laying around since he rebuilds these things all the time!!

As long as the wheel isn't bent, chipped, or dirty, it should work just fine.

87RX7TII 06-29-04 08:35 AM

thanks for the info.

I'm going to check around and I guess buy a used one from somebody. I only wanted to stay away from this because I was more worried about the older turbo really messing up.

When I got the turbo for $550 that included shipping and it was a rebuilt in A1 condition. Not to mention thats in CAN funds so about $370 US.

" just dont have the cash to go out and buy a new turbo considering I just bought that one... "
SHIT... I should probably start looking to sell it.

OverDriven... Sorry I'll try to stop whining so much, the car just hasent worked right since I bought it.
