BEGINNER RX7 Turbo II Owner NEEDS HELP!!!!

I'm thinking about buying my friend's RX7 1987 TurboII. HE slid into a snow bank and it needs a new door. The engine smokes a little and the antifreeze hose broke and I think the motor overheated once. I put the hose back on at his house and filled it with antifreeze. The battery was sort of low and it sputtered once and didn't start so we pop started it. Once pop started it runs pretty good. I took it down his street and it seemed like it lacked acceleration, didn't really have alot of pickup and didn't really jerk my head around. The air filter isn't clogged. It failed the emissions test. This would be my frist car and do you guys think it would be worth it for 400$ as is???? HELP!!!! The boost guage doesnt work either. I heard about putting brake fluid in the oil and letting it idle and change the oil and it'll make the oil gaskets swell and seal?

I NEED HELP! I got my license and wanna drive but I dont wanna buy an rx7 and have it turn out to be Sh*t. It has an honest 65K miles.

Anyone have a passenger side door? lol THANKS !

Read the FAQ at the top of the page. And if that motor has been overheated, you need to do the coolant seal check, also in the FAQ.

either way $400 is a good deal, you could part it out if it craps out on you but rest assured it will need some work.

You should also do a compression test to see if you'll need a rebuild soon. The lack of acceleration could be a dead rotor.

Ok after I run the car for 10-15 minutes and shut it off and slowly turn the coolant cap , water/coolant shoots out and it releases air, I think the system wasn't filled all the way up, is that normal? Is it hard to replace seals?????thanks shawn

I borrowed a compression tester from the local shop and screwed it into the top right hand spark plug hole and cranked the motor several times but no reading. The tester didn't have an O ring seal bit it was screwed in 1/2". I tried the tester on a snowblower and it didn't register crap! I'm going to go to autozone tomorrow night and buy one and then test the compression. Can you have good compression but blow coolant seals? Anyone know how much it would cost for someone to rebuild the engine or just put new seals in it? I'm highly mechanicly inclined but never worked on a rotary engine. How should I go about testing the compression? The rotors run up and down so there's two plug per rotor right? The top one and bottom one on the right are for one rotor ? HELP!!!! help is greatly appreciated......

I think my engine has been overheated. How can I check to see if the coolant seals are good?
Fill coolant system ALL THE WAY UP (engine cold). Make sure that the fluid level is as high as you can get it. Leave the filler cap off. Remove the EGI fuse. Crank the motor (it should not start). If you get a LARGE amount of coolant coming out of the coolant fill, its safe to assume your coolant seals are blown. Also, a good indication is a fuel/exhaust smell in the coolant.

And yes, you can have a blown seal and still have compression.

so if antifreeze shoots out of the coolant fill when turing the engine over it has bad seals?

How much work is it to replace them?

you have to rebuild the motor to replace those seals
