Beep Beep help-I read the FAQ

First let me start this thread by saying that I am new to RX7s and am in need of assitance. Ever since I got the car running I hear a constant beep beep pause beep beep pause (note this is while the car is running moving or standing still). The speedometer registers the correct speed +/- 2 mph. The tachometer appears to work properly, and the car pulls strong under a load when boosting (sorry no auxillary guage dash guage just pegs).
The FAQ states that two beeps is indicative of speed signal loss, and other threads list fixes from trailing coil to speedo cable to bad wires being found and replaced. I unplugged the powersteering control to no benefit as well and am stumped with the other items appearing to be working. I welcome one and all to please help as this is a irritating sound to tolerate while driving. Is there something specific to check for or try HELP!!!!

I dug into an old post that states that if the cruise does not work that I need to check the speed signal wire to verify if the cluster is still good. I will check that tomorrow when I get my hands on my multimeter. Any other things to check would be helpful as well. Oh, by the way I have an 88' Turbo ll with evidence of prior electrical hacking ie. aftermarket alarm and stereo HKS turbo timer and who knows what else.
If I need a different cluster how much are they and where can I get one without having to worry about buying someone else's junk?

What about the stepping motor signal?

2-beeps, pause, repeat - in case abnormality of engine speed signal:
The buzzer sounds twice and repeats when the vehicle speed signal is missing input and/or no engine speed signal is found (short circuit, broken wire, etc.)
In other words two beeps means the power steering computer is not seeing a tach signal... not seeing the correct engine speed. Are you sure the tach is working? and the trailing coils are firing? Could you have counted the beeps incorrectly?

Unplugging the power steering computer should have stopped the beeping... if it did not, either you didn't unplug the power steering computer (found behind the drivers dash speaker), or the beeping is not coming from the power steering computer.

My appologies for not following the rules, but to continue the tach is reading in what appears to be a normal fashion no skipping or erratic behavior. To reiterate I am new to RX7s and could not tell with any certainty if in fact the trailing coils are firing/ if the tach is registering properly. I unplugged the sardine can looking electronic component my Haynes manual identified as the powersteering computer, the one that is positioned horizontally behind the driver's speaker. I took the car out and could not get the car cruise control to engage following the owners manual instructions. The beeping definately is two beeps pause repeat over and over and over... and the sound is identical to the door warning beep when the key is in the ignition motor off used to warn the driver that the keys are still in the ignition.

I am in the FC buying process and today I called a guy in los angeles selling a '91 fc and one of the problems he mentioned was that "the car will start to beep sometimes at random and its because of the passenger side seatbelt warning..." something wrong with the seatbelt not buckled indicator. Hope this helps.

drftwerks 06-18-07 02:43 AM

so this beeping will cause the ps to stop correct??

in my car, after i drive for about 15 - 20 min the beeping starts, and the ps system seems to be disabled, and the tach does seem to work fine, i jsut wanted to make sure before i look at the wiring diag. just wanted to make sure to see what circuit i should be looking at.

ok, ignore my post. Next time I should read the body and not just the title :101384_l:

Guys I really could use some help here and while I appreciate the occasional highjack someone please add to the remedies and ideas for things to look at. Thanks.

Cruise control uses the same tach signal that the power steering computer uses.

So when you unplugged the power steering computer and went for a drive, were there still beeps?

FCPug3 06-18-07 12:44 PM

Yes, with the door shut from the moment the key is switched to the on position motor not running the beep- beep starts and continues uninterupted while starting the motor, pursists while driving, and only stops once the key is switched from the on position to ACC or Lock.

Acesanugal 06-18-07 01:59 PM

My power steering beeps once, then pause, and repeat. That's 'Abnormality of Speed Sensor Signal' Now, how do I fix it? :Wconfused

well if it is still beeping when the car is running but the power steering computer is unplugged, then the problem is not coming from the power steering computer.

The other things that beep are the seat belt warning, door open lights on warning, key in the ignition warning.

plug your speedo cable back in

LMAO, thank you for the straightforward answer...my speedo doesn't work, and I believe that's the cable just kind of hanging there below the car. I'll get to it eventually...
:rlaugh:

I checked the three thing listed as possible causes. The seat belt indicator which is wired to the driver's belt appears to work fine shuting off the visual warning light once I latch the seat belt. The interior lights work properly when either door/ both doors are opened again shutting off the visual warning light. The key in the ignition door open chime also seems to work fine, but one of these is probably causing the continued beep-beep pause beep-beep... if the key switch was the culprit how would I go about testing it or the others for that matter?

Icemark 06-19-07 08:59 PM

unplug the CPU and see if it goes away

FCPug3 06-19-07 09:55 PM

Okay, unplugged the CPU and the noise did go away, no more beep- beep. What does this mean?

Icemark 06-20-07 08:16 PM

Your door is open with the key in the ignition, or your lights are on and the door is open, or seat belt is not on, but the engine is running.

FCPug3 06-21-07 10:32 PM

Okay I checked and double checked everything and nothing is open, unbuckled, or left on with the car running driving or standing still and yet the sound persists thanks to the CPU. Is there something simple like a shorted wire or something that could be the culprit? I'm losing it.:wallbash:

Icemark 06-21-07 10:49 PM

Does the dome light come on and turn off with the door open and closed?

Does the beep start when you put the key in the ignition and turn it one notch or only when the ignition is on?

Does it change if you put the lights on and open the door?

Acesanugal 06-21-07 11:05 PM

My speedo cable turned out to be hooked up...but my speedo does not work and my power steering beeps at me. Could the cable have just gone 'bad'?

sure. The speedometer needs to work for the power steering to work correctly on any S4 or a S5 Turbo

FCPug3 06-23-07 09:26 PM

The dome lights come on and go off with either door properly.
The beep beep starts when the key is switched to the on position.
Sometimes the beep beep is muted and when I switch the lights on (engine running) the beep beep pace remains the same but the noise becomes louder and more distinct.

double check:
Beep starts in the Acc or ON position?

Sounds like a back key sensor... sometimes they come undone at the bottom of the key/ignition switch
