Battery read 14v on safc2...now lights are dim and it read 9.8v? (search isn't workin

Just as long as title says.

Was driving around, and the safc2 battery voltage said 14v (so i was happy). I let it idle for about 10 mins while i talked and stuff. I get back in, and all the lights are super dim, and the safc2 battery voltage said 9.6v. WTF is going on here. I'm fairly new to rotaries, but to me it sounds like an alternator problem, as the car is basically running off the battery.

PLEASE HELP, I GOTTA GET THIS THING GOING, ITS MY ONLY MODE OF TRANSPORTATION :(

Thanks guys

Yea man, rx7s are notorious for their weak, none the less, crappy alternators. Seems like your limiter is jacked up. Just go to advanced auto parts or somthing and get a free diagnosis. From there, you should be able to determine if its your battery or alternator, or maybe both.

the more and more i think about it, the more is seems like the alternator. Cuz i'm just sitting in the car, safc2 is reading 14.0v at idle. Then out of nowhere it shoots down to 9.6v, everything goes dim, idle drops to 500.

craziness.

thanks for any help guys

there is an FD anternator sale that ends May 1st. good prices and a higher amperage.

do a search for it

Well, sometime take a little time, and pull the small plug off the alternator and check for 12v on the Black/White wire

And the next time it drops to 9 whatever volts, leave the car running and put your meter on the stud that holds the output wire on the alternator. NOT the wire terminal but the stud. Maybe there is a corroded/loose connection there.

If you rev the engine after the votage has dropped to nine whatever volts.....does the voltage rise?

voltage does not rise, it stays the same. But I will try to do that stuff today

thanks

ok guys, did an old test my friend told me. He said to start the car, then remove the pos bat cable to let the car run off of the alternator. Well I did that, and the car died. So im almost positive that its the alternator. Does anyone else have anything else it could be?

Parastie 04-17-04 05:37 PM

My car did that when the alternator belt broke so I'd say it's the alternator as well.
