Bad Oil temperature problems 120c (250F)
Hi!
i've been driving with very high oil temperature for 5000 kilometers. Just recently tested the sensor with 90C water and another temp probe and the gauge reads right. Sensor is mounted on to oil filter pedestal via RB adapter. I cleaned the stock cooler because i thought it was clogged, maybe it still is.. thermostat works like it should. then I bought a new aftermarket cooler and got some hoses made- even worse. Temp climbs to 250F and stays there. Im using a castrol edge 10w60 supercar oil Griffin big radiator Large intercooler in the front of oil cooler 6 port turbo Just put new oil in, pressure is better but temp is still bad. engine rebuilt 6000km ago What could be the reason for this? Intercooler blocking the air flow? Oil too thick? Too small oil cooler? test drove it @ night on highway, with cooler air and still nothing. Any advice? I should be in a car show @ saturday, hope i can make it. |
got pics of the setup including the radiator, oil cooler, and intercooler?

This is the new radiator @ the same place where the stock oil cooler was, i know its smaller, but the temps are the same with stock. Fmic covers the whole front bumper hole... |
Do you have another picture? I can't figure out what's going on. you've got an oil cooler hanging there, what looks like some other kind of oil cooler, then an intercooler? Or that's the radiator? Where's the intercooler?
Do you have the undertray installed when you are driving? You need that to direct airflow. |

Can it be the control valve on the front cover being too soft? If i remember right i shimmed it with some washers but maybe the spring is worn out? Oil cooler gets hot for sure, but maybe the flow is too small to the cooler? |

better pic of the setup |
I think your #1 oil cooling problem here is that fat FMIC is blocking airflow. Also what are you running for a fan (stock fan or e-fan?), and is all the stock ducting in place? All of that has a huge impact on heat exchanger efficiency - you need air to flow thru them, not around them.

Villager fan on the radiator, i have the plastic undertray and foam under the radiators like on stock setup

10W60? why?

So i got info from higgi... He said that if fmic is mounted then you sure would need 2 oil coolers on fc.
so my plan is to make 1 new oil cooler from two of the stock ones, same design - double the cooling capacity.. Gonna buy some 4mm aluminium sheet tomorrow morning to build new end tanks to the cooler, also i have new weldable AN10 fittings, and then a sleepless night to mount the cooler to the car to be @ carshow at saturday 12.00 pm https://www.upload.ee/image/8730910/...726_191440.jpg |
Are you 100% sure the thermal bypass pellet in the eccentric shaft is working correctly or properly eliminated? (Of course is assuming your e-shaft uses one...)
Also not sure how the climate is where you're at, but 10w60 just sounds to me like a bad idea no matter what quality the oil is. |
Extremely hot summer this year (for us) 30+ celsius, cant even remember when it was so hot for so long, maybe in childhood..
i have the atkins thermal bypass plug or whatever its called. Should be working( oil is coming through when i loosen the bolt on the e shaft.. So 60 weight oil is too much? Shouldnt be a problem when hot i think.. 50 or 60, not a big difference in my opinion |
Yeah, actually it may be the oil if i think about it... Like can it be too thick to fall out of the rotor because of the centrifugal force?
the double oil cooler lowered the temp for about 15Celsius.. |
Just now looked at the intercooler and started thinking its the airflow.... The cooler is on an angle, a bit more than radiators and if the air comes through it, it only flows on the top part of the radiator and past the oil cooler( tested with compressed air)
gonna try to move the oil rad directly behind the intercooler and test it then. |
It is the airflow.. oil temp very nice at highway, but at low speed still gets hot.
must build some ductings and a vent for city driving.. |
