bad oil pressure sensor = oil leak?
 

ok so after getting a water tube replaced, the mechanic found out that the oil pressure sensor was bad and that oil was leaking. why is that? when the oil pressure sensor goes bad, does that mean it also gets loose? how much would it cost to replace it?

Mine was dead, so I just bought a mechanical oil pressure gauge for 20 CAN $. It included the fitment and everything I needed. Furthermore, it is really more sensitive, I can see the oil pressure's variation everytime I press the gas pedal.

They can fail in several ways. If the actual sender is leaking, the it needs to be replaced. If it's leaking where it screws into the block all you have to do is remove and reinstall with the proper sealant (pipe dope or teflon sealant).

ok so i went to an rx-7 specialist and he told me he didn't see anything wrong with the sensor (but he only took a glance at it) and said it's probably the oil filter o-rings. he'll take a better look on friday.

Where is it leaking from? Im having a similar probalem
i noticed today on mine there was an oil spot on the ground and when i looked under it, it looks to be almost under the drain plug but the plug is tight,
is that sensor your talking about above the drain plug where the 1 or 2 lines head into? I think thats where my leak is coming from (just started leakin today/last night)

mine actually next to the oil filter, towards the driver side. i dont really know how to explain it because i didn't take a good look. i do know that my car's been sitting for a while (oil sitting = bad).

oh ok, I didnt know the oil pressure sensor is up by the oil filter, i dont think my leak is that high up (from what i could tell). But its good to know where that stuff is.

The two o-rings at the oil filter pedestal are very common leak points.

how much does it usually cost to replace?

one other thing, how much does it usually cost to replace shift bushings?

The o-rings are a few cents each. There's about half an hour of labour involved for anyone who has done it before. Not sure about the pressure sender though as I have never priced a new one. Mazdatrix will have pricing on their website.

They will also have pricing on the shifter bushings. Last I checked, the kit was around $50 or so.

how do I take the wire off and clean the Oil pressure sender contact point to the wire?,
I put in new orings but the sending unit is covered in oil gunk,

The wire clips on tightly. Wear some thick gloves and use your thumb to push the wiring harness straight down from the top. The gloves are important because once the harness unclips it WILL cut your finger.

Now just hose the area down with brake cleaner. Coat the connection in dielectric grease and reassemble.
