Axle Shafts N/A vs Turbo
 

Whats the difference between the two?? mounting flange, length, shaft diameter, joint size? Enlighten me please. Dave C.

Nobody knows? I'm thinking of upgrading to the stronger turbo shafts, but would like to know if they would fit my non-turbo diff, and what makes them stronger. Dave C.

I know that the Half shafts are not interchangeble, dont know about the axles. Wait till somone who knows what they're talking about responds :)

Why would you want strong axles on the weaker NA differential?

but to answer you question:

The turbo axle flanges have a larger bolt pattern than the NA differential and don’t bolt up.

You can swap the whole turbo differential and axles into a NA but you will have to rework the drive shaft because the turbo differential driveshaft flange is also different from the NA.

Just swap out the whole diff if you're going to bother :D

I would swap out everything including the diff, but I can't run 4.10s. I'm installing a 500+ hp GN engine and tranny. I need around a 3.08 ratio. My plans are to adapt a corvette diff to the RX-7 half shafts. It would be so much simpler if someone would offer other ratios for the quite strong RX-7 turbo differential. Thanks for your help.

I know that a lot of people have already adapted that great ford rear for the 7s. Might want to look into that.

If you look around you can probably find parts to make the differential anything that you want... Turbo's of course have a 4.3 and NA's 4.1 (i think that's right)... And 3.08 is gonna be hella slow and make the car's top speed about 300 MPH (theoretical) :-P
What exactly are you trying to do? It sounds like you're gonna be putting hella strain on the car... and you might wanna get a KAAZ LSD or something high end like that... I don't really know what I'm talking about... but I do know that when the rear end of a car goes out it's not pleasant and its real scary too...

Gotta read slower there tex.. Grand National engine and probably an auto tranny, i.e. probably tops out at 5K RPM, and he's going to want to cruise at 2K.. He can't rev the piss out of it like our 13Bs, and won't need to.

David, check with GNX7, he's done this swap, not sure what rear he used.

For reference, turbo's had a 4.1 rear-end just like the N/A (5sp), the GTUs was the only car with the 4.3 (weaker, N/A style)

Silkworm, you got it right. The GN uses a 3.42 ratio with a 26 inch tall tire. Many have played with the ratios, but usually go back to it. It's about perfect. I'm thinking 3.23 would be about right for the 7s smaller tire combo. I thought 3.08 might work well because the car's so light. I know of one (Misred.com) that's running a corvette rear with 2.59s. He loves them, 30 mpg, and went into the 10s in the quarter from 11.2s. I think GNX7 is still running a stock rear, but planning a conversion soon. Thanks for all the help. I thought I'd get beat-up on, for going rotorless! I'd like more info or contacts on other possible diff swaps, if you know of any. Dave C.

Thanks V8RX7. I consult with Mike (misred.com) often. He has been great for posting detailed info on his conversion. Unfortunately, Ive got a C3 Corvette rear that I'm trying to work with. His is a C4. I've got to try to find out the width of the diff between the axle flanges. I think the C3 might be too wide. Anyone able to get a rough measurement of a Turbo RX-7 diff from flange to flange? Thanks. Dave C.
