auxillary port sound?
i got my aux ports cleaned and al put back together. but i still dont know if they are working. i think i have a vacuum leak somewhere in the system. when i move the aux ports up and down, i hear a swooshing air sound on the other side of the motor. i think its near the solenoid rack behind the power steering pump. my question is if this sound is normal or do i just have a huge vacuum leak? thanks

Judging from a "swooshing" sound from the opposing side of the engine, I would guess S5.

his writeup is for the series 4 i believe, since thats what he has. The S5 works on pressure rather than vacuum. Meh. but basically the same thing.

Well, the point is, it will tell the thread originator if the ports are working. Grease on the shafts..etc...

This is an S5.
When the 6PI solenoid is de-energised, moving the actuator arm should move air in and out of the little vent on the end of the solenoid. Sounds normal to me. |
On series 5 N/A's, the port actuators push to open, and only under high load.
To test them, T in a pressure gage and blow into the tube to check at what pressure they open. Then route the tube inside with the gage on the end, and do a test drive to see when they open. This also works for the VDI. |

i always fail to understand why people make this sound so complicated. put some grease on the actuator shafts, drive above 4k, see if the grease is in the same spot. if it moved, they opened.

Method 200,002 for seeing if they open: Find the solenoid. Disconnect both vac(really pressure) hose. Tee them together with a plastic twienty cent nipple from the auto store. Start the engine. The actuators should have actuated. If not.....you have a bad vac(pressure hose) or more likely a bad gasket on one or both actuators.
Electrical?? Run two small wires from the solenoid into the interior or the wipers. Attach a LED from RadioShack. Go for a spin. When you hit the specific rpm the light should.....light up. Or use method 0000001 and put some heavy grease on the actuators and go for a spin. Did the grease on the actuators show evidence of movement? Yes? Then all is well. NO? Fix the solenoid, actuator gasket, vac hose, electrical problem with the solenoid. Your pick. |

S4s work on pressure too not vacuum, thus the reason people use air pumps to actuate them whehn they no long have back pressure

thanks everyone. i kno they work smoothly because ive taken them off and cleaned them up, made sure sure the port sleeves in the intake manifold slide back and forth smoothly. i just wanted to kno if that swooshing sound was ok. thanks again.

The grease test works on an S4 because they pull to open, BUT- the in the S5 setup they push to open.
So when you open the hood the look, the grease looks the same. |
