aux port cleaning / uim+lim removal
 

i plan on cleaning my aux ports, and cleaning off my intake manifolds this weekend while im wasting away with the fam...

can anyone tell me if i need to use new gaskets when i put them back on? (the IMs) im deadly terrified of removing them but i have to do it sometime (i had a vaccuum leak on the manifold gaskets when i first got the car, i dont want to go through that again)

is it idiot proof? i have lots of mechanical experience, i just never took them off myself before.

also, i searched and found a writeup on REMOVING the aux ports, i want to know if anyone knows a good text on removing, cleaning, and installing...

last q: what sort of cleaner should i use on my uim and lim? they are pretty crusty and engine degreaser didnt touch the stains

Get the Haynes or factory manual for removal procedures.

Yes, you need new gaskets. Also, you should replace all those old vacuum hoses while you are there, and check for leaks around your pulsation damper.

As for cleaning, a wire brush does wonders, but DO NOT use it on the gasket surfaces. They make gasket scrapers and removal chemicals for that.

are the gaskets mazda specific? i work at an auto parts store, think i can get em through there?

You should know this if you work at an auto parts store.

Yes, they are Mazda specific. They're only a few dollars at the dealer.

never looked up mazda rotary manifold gaskets... figured id see if i could reuse them or not because they are pretty thick

They will likely tear on removal.

Acetone works well as a solvent for the gunk in the manifolds, and for cleaning the gasket mating surfaces just prior to boltdown. Just don't sniff too much of it :)
