Automotive relay for e-fan?

Hey all I was thinking about how I have to go with an e-fan with the K2RD radiator I plan to buy for my TII and I got a fiero fan to start off with since its cheap and then I may go with a black majik or perma cool later. But I was checking out ebay and saw this thing. Is this the relay that I need? I have never done an e-fan install but I have read countless times that you need to set it up properly with a relay and thermostat switch so that it isn't "ghetto". Is this what I am looking to buy or is this just ebay junk? Santiago |

THey also have them on ebay without the harness. Should I get the one with or without the harness?

they've got real bosch relays there too that would be about 500% better than the ebay item listed above...
EDIT: Harness ~1.75 + 5 butt connectors ~ $.50 5 crimp style slider thigies... $.50 easy choice to me... |

that should do it, don't see how you're gonna draw more than 40 amps when it's on...I've been "ghetto", as ya call it, for years now...only a couple of times (atm stops, mostly) have I forgot to turn it on & all of a sudden noticed the temp climbing. receive the paypal?

Santiago As for that, parts express has the Bosch relays which are the best bosch type relay (go figure) for $1.99 i think. They'd last longest out of all other ones. dang guys, i just went ahead and spent the 40 something for the fan controller from summit or jegs. at first tho, i just got a relay from RadioCrack and wired it to an ignition on wire so that whenever the key is on, the fan is on. now i have the fan controller that turns the fan on through a thermal probe in the radiator. simple install.
get a 30amp relay and at least a 20amp fuse, i measured the amperage on the fan during startup and it got up to 18 amps. (fiero fan) |

I've seen it but I didn't know what all the symbols mean because I am not electrically inclined. ;)

I deliberately avoided any strange symbols (except for the diode) for that very reason. If you look at the bottom of a 12V automotive relay, that's exactly what it looks like. Just follow the numbers.

what is the exact point of the diode? (never looked into AC wiring)
what would happen without it gaving the AC wire 12v when the fan turned on? would the AC turn on every time the fan turned on? or something else? |

Without the diode, every time the temp switch closes, the switched ignition feed would energise the A/C clutch. I missed that completely, someone else pointed it out for me. ;)
20A should be enough for most fans, but I've heard the Fiero fans pull ~18A and some other OEM fans even more, so yeah you'd want a bit more headroom. As long as the relay and wiring are also sufficiently rated for the fan, you'll be sweet. :) |
Ok one last thing I need to know is the temp range I should look for in the temp switch. I was looking at some that were adjustable between 180-240 degrees F is that suitable for the FC's normal operating temp? I think it is but I don't know because I only have the stock guage. :(

I just use an imperial temp sensing relay.
