Automatic Seatbelt Track broke
 
Alright, well I called up the local dealership and found out my car has no outstanding recalls, meaning I am outta luck. Can this be fixed easily enough without taking my car into the dealership? Has anybody tried to fix their own auto-seatbelt, when it broke before?

What year is your car? Are you talking about the shoulder belt that moves forward when you open the door? If so, that IS a recall.

Automatic seat belts (89-91) have a lifetime warentee. If the local mazda dealership will not honor it, call mazda customer service.

Now the beeping seatbelt when you shift around in the seat is not warenteed - but inexpensive to fix / have fixed. There's a TSB (technical service bulletin) on it that has the fixed part # that prevent this from happening again.

Yeah, If your car is 89-91 and your automatic seatbelt broke, it is definitely covered under warranty. If Mazda says it isnt, they are full of shit. They just want to puss out of doing the work. Like another guy said, call Mazda customer service. Get it off their website or something. Also do a websearch on RX7 automatic seatbelt recall, the info on the recall has a 1-800 number to call if you have trouble getting yours covered.

Yes, I have a 1990 GTU with automatic seatbelts...but what the dealership is saying after looking up my VIN is that my car has no outstanding recalls, meaning it has already been fixed....so if it breaks again, is it still under warranty or whatever?

I had that recall preformed on my '91 TII. Then, one year latter it stopped working. And a year latter I persued getting getting it fixed (When I failed the VA inspection). The belt stopped retracting.

When I called the local dealer they told me to call the 800 mazda number to verify this was a lifetime recall. I called it 1-800-222-5500. Gave them my VIN number and they said it was preformed but it was an INSPECTION.

So I called the local dealer and set up an appointment. I didnt get an appointment for a few days. But that was because they ordered new parts.

Before I brought the car in I removed the a pilliar and B pilliar trim to make there job easier. Also, incase they break the trim i don't think they would replace it. Besides, I have pilliar mounted gauges.

I dropped it off at 9am and had it by 4pm the same day. They replaced the track and the motor unit. But man...that selt belt thing moves like a hyper rabit on crack!

So, I was pleased about the results. So go get it fixed man:)

My '90 GXL is at the dealer as I write this. I called up and mentioned the recall and they gave me zero hassles about it. When I dropped it off they asked if I had ever brought it in for work before and told me it was free of charge, of course.

If you have a '89-'91 RX-7, they have to fix a broken seatble retractor no matter what.

I can fax you a copy of the original letter that Mazda sent out to owners pertaining to the recall. just let me know the fax number.

Hi for all I am Jose from Puerto Rico I have a 1990 that have the seat beat damaged, I just have to call the 1-800-222-5500 gave them the vin number and they game me something to go to the dealer?
If any person can help me it will be appreciate,

You have to take your car to a dealership. There is no other option.

they will replace the track and its assembly. and MOST of the time they will break some of the trim in the process. so the dealership will either make you "sign" a wavier or they will try to replace the parts if break or break it but no telling you or say OH WELL or be REAL/super careful on it.

We get these seatbelt threads about three times a year. They WILL FIX IT, they will try to say it's already been done, but THEY HAVE TO FIX IT FOR THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. That means if it's still on the road then it's still under lifetime warranty. Some dealerships know what's up and just do it, while some are idiots and make it a problem. I had to call Mazda North America one time and have the lady put the call on three way so she could tell the dealer they had to fix it. I had it done three times on my old GTU... Mousebelts suck! It would be easier to just have them install manual belts or do it yourself.

P.S. They will break your trim and try to say it was already broken too, or just not tell you like they did with mine last time.

the recall is for the life of the vehicle. it was a poor design and is a safety issue with the car for as long as it remains on the road, meaning they have to fix it regardless of age.

i got the runaround too when i took my car in for the recall, they said that they drop the car out of the system after 7 years so as of now anyone who needs the recall done and has a lazy mazda service department, you will have to call mazda customer service to have them make the appointment for you.

the dealership also gave me some BS excuse that the car has a salvaged title, but that still does not give them any leighway to ignoring the recall.

take pics with a time stamp paper and your name showing the unbroken trim pieces, maybe it would help your case if they end up breaking shit.

I always print off the NHTSA recall paperwork whenever I need a recall done. I did that when my car had this issue, he had to talk to his manager to double check but they did the work and it was great :3

there is a scanned original of the recall letter somewhere... print it out and take it to the dealership. That is what I did.

The recall only covers the track mechanism and motor.
If the belts themselves are damaged, you're SOL.

yep, as the mouse belt ... grr the seat belt's tractor (thats what they call it) is No Longer Available from Mazda. Even the part to fix the blinking light is NLA.

Mine had this problem, and I fixed it with another part, blinking light gone :)

better buy a mouse belt assembly from a part out and save it for later.

do the S5's have the bosses to mount the manual seatbelts? this is actually one of the reasons I wanted my S4 versus an S5 so I wouldn't have to dick around with the belts.

it could be done, but most if not all dealerships will NOT do the install due to liability.

Even most garage would not do it (not like they even know how)

You'd need to modify the interior plastics to run manual belts but yes all the bolt holes are there. I ran S4 manual belts for convenience in my S5 TII track car and everything bolts up just fine. Looking at my new S5 with full interior though probably gonna have to trim up some interior panels to make the upper bracket for the shoulder belt.

I go to the dealer Mazda today and they say to me that the recall expired and is not possible change the seat belt , any person can help me about that,

Jose,

This was a safety recall required by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and is extended for the life of the cars covered. This means Mazda has to fix it however many times it breaks. Here's a link to an older thread with lots of good info on the S5 seatbelt recall:

Among other things, it includes the text of Mazda's original recall letter from 1996 as well as phone numbers for Mazda and the NHTSA if your local dealer won't help you.

It may help to mention the Mazda recall campaign number: 68702. This should help your dealer locate the terms of the recall.
