Automatic Power?
 

I'm currently looking itno buying an automatic 1988 RX7 SE and was wondering how it's low end torque would compare to my '94 automatic 626? I know each car is different and the only true way to find out would be to test drive the rx7, but it's currently about 900 miles away.

I've heard that the S4 automatics are "terrible" off the line. Now, I'm not looking to street race OR track race, I just want something a tiny bit peppier than my 626. Can anyone help me out?

umm... rotaries are not known for there low end torque, you have to go through the revs to get some power out of it.

i had an 87 base model auto and getting off the line quick was tough, but the higher end power and the ease of the auto was nice. i enjoyed it.

i'm not sure on how it would compare to a 626 though...

I'm figuring since both cars weigh almost the same, and the S4 rx7 has 138 tq at 3500rpm/146 hp at 6500rpm and my 626 has 128 tq/118hp (I dont know where they peak though), the rx7 will be slightly faster.

Anyone else with an automatic care to comment?

What engine does your 626 have? Im pretty sure they came with a 6 or a 4.

A cars weight, either 150lbs or 300lbs is very different, 20-25hp is also a big difference, it'll be alot peppier. If you want a little more acceleration off the line, convert it to 5-speed. Have fun!

i have a 86 gxl auto. a bit slow in the take off. and below 3000 rpm.......not fast, but i removed the 5th/6th port sleeves, and a FULL exhaust, so past 3000 rpm, the little guy kicks UP! and if you need to go uphill or something, just put it manualy into first. thats what i do when i need more power....first, move it up to second, then to "D"...THEN i turn ON the over drive for fourth.

I have the 2.0 4 cyl. 626. Quite honestly, while looking at the HP and TQ. numbers (and the fact that the car weighs around 2800lbs) you would think it's extremely slow. IMO, it's not too bad. It has some low end kick that I can be proud of from a mid 90's 4 cyl. I'm just ready for something a lil faster.

That isn't an acturate take on what the acceleration will be. I used to have the aux ports wired open an a wide open exhaust, and the low end power was crap. I used to have a 626, but it was the V6 model. It had a good bit of pep, but I still think the 7 has a little better low end power. That said, I'm pretty sure you will have better acceleration accross the board with the RX-7. If nothing else, its much easier to modify the 7. I guess the only way to know for sure is to drive both, but thats my opinion.

I have a 90 conv with an auto. After the engine was rebuilt it had almost no power off the line for the first 1000 miles. It has gotten better with more mileage (at least until the electrical problem!). I have thought about swapping out the auto, but it has plenty of power once you get above 2500 rpm and the auto is nice in heavy traffic.

Hey buddy, honestly i think you should go for a manual, I have an auto 88 and it really is shit until u reach about 3000, im saving up to do a conversion, but if you can try and get a drive in both you will soon find out which is better!

I have a 91 NA auto, and every now and then, I'll try to get better take off. The only way I know about getting a better take off, is from a starting roll.

Roto: I do the samething as well, for the uphill comment. The thing is, Your "Hold" button works, unlike mine. So I can only do L, which I will feel power, S.....no point in even having that there, since I get no difference until I put it in D, then my revs will drop back into gear. But yea, the best thing for you to do is to get a manual.....OR, you can always overhaul your tranny, and install a shift kit.....
