Autobox stuck in park

Good evening from the UK :D

i have a 1991 JDM Turbo II cab with a poorly autobox

I have multiple issues with her , but i thought i would start with the main issue .. and that is , she is stuck in park

Regardless if i press the brake or have the hand brake on or off it wont release from Park

Does anyone have any idea where i need to start ?

The car itself starts and runs just fine , but its locked in park :(

Could it be a faulty separate ECU or does it not use one ?

I have noticed a ECU in the passenger foot well on the inner wing ( please note , its a UK right hand drive ) - could that have failed and its causing me no ends of issues ?

I have tried to "meter" out some of the connectors under the shifer but im not seeing voltage anywhere

I know this is a super vauge post .. but i just need a starting point

I have a spare auto box .. but no point trying to swap it out if its stuck in park

Thanks for ANY help :D

Sort out if its the box or the shifter, disconnect the cable or rod (forget which it is) frome the shift lever and see if you can then move the lever to change gears.

im 99.99% sure when i used to press the brake pedal , it unlocked the box ( like an auto today )

Im not getting that "click" when i press the brake, so im not sure if it has an electric locking mechanism ?

having taken apart the shifter , the shift lock actuator isnt triggering

So thats locking the box in park

Ive no idea how to test it - but getting closer i think :D

Well i think i have fixed it :D

I removed the shift lock actuator and plugged the wiring back in and it worked fine ( when pressing the brake the actuator extended and retracted )

Had a look at the bar that it was connected to in the box and it wouldn't move

Gave it a serious wiggle and it moved ... well thats good !!!

Put the actuator back in , and now when i apply the brakes it unlocks the box and you can select gears

So the bar had seized on the shaft thats all ( but you have to take it all apart to find out )

Next job .. swapping an auto box .. never taken on anything of this size before :D

Congratulations! I was thinking it might be the linkage.

Started her up at the weekend , and ive still no reverse gear , so looks like the box will have to come out ... that should be interesting

I have a spare "condition unknown" auto box , but not sure if its a S4 or S5

If it wont fit then i have no idea what to do with the car .. it may get sold on for spares or repair .. shame really .. its only done about 6k on a rebuild and runs like a dream

But in the UK parts are getting harder and harder to locate and they are £££££££££ ( or $$$$$$$$$$$ :D )

I'm sure there are rebuild kits available but I cannot be sure about the UK. It was used in the pickups too, I think (or something like it with similar internals). I've rebuilt old American automatics on a garage floor, it can be done by a novice. I did it before cell phones so, lots of cordboard and magic marker but, with a phone, just take pictures.

I edited to say I see you have already looked for parts. Time for a manual swap, you'll like it more anyways.
