auto trans shift problem
Have 91 N/A automatic. Trans slipped so I had it rebuilt. New friction plates, new drum and bands rebuilt torque converter. Reinstalled and it will not shift out of first with out letting up on the gas, When it has shifted it will not down shift to first unless I push the hold button. I think that the trans was rebuilt correctly. I have been told that I have a shifter solenoid problem. dont know what that is but I am willing to try anything.

try a trany swap, put a 5 in that thang....you'll be glad you did. Your rex will eat right through a new auto and soon enough you'll be needing another tranny.

Sounds electric-al/onic, fluid level, bad rebuild.....
Other than the slipping, did it work before the rebuild??
If it worked before the rebuild, it should work now. It could be bad solenoids, incorrectly connected solenoids.... loose connections going to/from the tranny. What worries me are the words "I think.....correctly". Have a Mazda dealer perform the EC-AT test. Yep its time to spend more money. Either find a more competent rebuilder, replace the solenoids, or just pay out the a$$ for a dealer opinion. The 5 speed swap sounds better. How are 2nd/3rd/OD/reverse/TC lockup??? |
If it worked before and doesn't now it could be as simple as a vacuum problem.

i think TC lock-up is your HOLD feature. keeps the car in one gear when active, or dwnshifts to 3rd when running in OD. IMO go with the swap, i have a crap-o-matic tranny thats starting to blend 1st and 2nd gear together (WTF!!!!). i guess its slipping. when i stop at a light or sign i put it into neutral then back into gear and it shifts fine for a while. anyway im bout ready to swap out before i put my turbo in.

Update??
ericsycamore-
What did you end up doing about this? I'm having the same problem in my '90 GXL with needing to engage the hold button so that it'll hold the gears, but I can click the hold off at 40 mph and it will work fine. Any help is much appreciated. Oh...the car belongs to the folks and mom shot down the 5spd swap (even though she wants a manual 350Z). Thanks. Eenis |
Anybody have any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Mine did similar. Constant shifting up and down. Replaced the TPS and now it shifts great. Check the FSM for troublshooting the TPS.

Stop wasting time with that quirky unreliable POS. get that damn thing out from under your car and put in a 5 speed.
If you want to keep learning the hard way how much the automatic sucks, then at least adjust your TPS, and make sure the vacuum hose going to the transmission is clear. |
Ronin, i agree w/ you about the automatic being evil, which is why i have a 5spd. in my maxima. Good looking out y'all on the TPS and vacuum hoses.....thanks.
|
That is the only advice that i can offer, and yes, one silly little vacuum hose getting clogged will most certainly cause your tranny to run like crap and fry.

bad valve body was the main isue
Finally got fed up on the tranny slipping and took it to a reccomended repair shop
and asked that they put in a new perfromance shift kit in the valve body to help firm up the shifts.... took them over a week because after they rebuilt it the tranny was still skipping second gear !,,,They said my valve body was the issue and replaced it with a used one from another transmission. They said the shift kit was a real pain in the ass, and felt they could get the same effect by raising the line pressure. Got the car back friday and it definately drives so much better! since no one would answer my TPS question I looked it up on this website which posts the entire service manual on PDF! http://www.rx7city.com/89-91manual.htm |
How do you raise the line pressure in the auto?
