ATF Trick question
 

Well, I figured since I bought the car with 174k on it, that after the full tune-up the ATF trick might help a little bit. So I've been kind of researching it a little, and I went and bought a quart of ATF and new plugs. The article I read, said to leave it in for at least 24 hours...then I start reading into it more and one person said to not even leave it in overnight because its too corrosive. I'm just wondering what I should do, because I dont' want to mess anything up and a few opinions could help out a lot. Any help would be great at this point cuz I was actually going to be leaving it in for over 24 hours but its up in the air now.

Don't use ATF at all its pointless does nothing to help the motor and is evryware on the internet to do so.

Use MMO or plain old motor oil if you need to build compression when unflooding the car. Other then that you dont need to do any of these "tricks".

He's talking about a tune-up, not deflooding...

Use water while the engine is running to clean the rotors.

A full tuneup is all you need. If you really want to do "tricks" on the engine, then search for "water trick". Though I question the value of any of these since I've owned several high mileage RX-7s that have been fine without any sort of "trick" (including my turbo-NA car).

My dad was a mazda mechanic in the 70's. When I was a kid he had a rotary truck that was consuming oil at a quart per 100 miles or so and smoking some. He used pure ATF in the crank case for around 10-20 minutes of idling with the idle tured to 2k. After that the oil consumption dropped to 1 qt per 800-1000 miles. That engine lasted till 96K which was good for one of the early generation (1974) 13b's.

Hows that for a "trick"

On your old motor, you can do both if you want.
Give the steam cleaning, than the ATF rinse, then the red line purge.
Might help - probably won't hurt, (unless the motor was about to break anyway).

After you pass a quarter million miles, a little motor honey will reduce the smoke some.
