ATF trick - OK to substitute MMO???
 

I'm about to help a friend with a 13B that has been sitting for several months. I'm big the idea of hitting it with ATF, but I've started wondering if using MMO wouldn't be a tad more effective?

Any comments? Is this a case of, "6 of one, a half dozen of the other"?

I am in the process of doing the MMO trick for the first time. I know that if you have cats I would stick with the MMO so you don't clog them up. I have no experience so that is all I can really say without starting to pull stuff out of my......

remove plugs

put any oil in there that burns 100% clean

turn engine over by hand for like 5 minutes (or use small tool)

Pull EGI fuse and crank engine with the car floored until you see 30-45 psi of oil on the stock guage. This will raise your oil pressure and prime the oil metering lines (flooring does this, only on S4).

oil that burns 100% clean - would TC-W3 two-cycle oil fit that bill? I've got a bunch of Castrol Super Outboard Motor Oil (TC-W3) that I'm already mixing in my gas...

Nothing wrong with the ATF trick - I've used it myself when my own 13B sat for 6 months. She was 100% when I got her back on the road and she still is. :) But I'm wondering if this nifty kerosene-based cleaner wouldn't do a tad better job zapping whatever carbon and crap is in the engine.

Would throwing some MMO in with the TC-W3 (if TC-W3 is okay to use) be a good idea?

Not sure.... Your object is to just lube up the seals right?? the TC-W3 2 stroke... Isnt that sticky stuff?? I'd just use any oil which burns clean. The 2 stroke stuff is great for premix but not sure about tons of it in the chamber.

If your trying to do some ATF overnight carbon fix then dont use the 2 stroke, use atf or mmo. I've heard ATF has more detergents which is prefered for ATF "trick".

what you should have done was filled the engine with ATF (or MMO, or fogging oil, or motor oil, or anything oily) BEFORE storing the car.

The "atf decarbonizing" doesn't work over a few minutes. Or even overnight. I experimented with engine parts and found that you need to let it soak 3 days to a week or more, if that's your intention.

Then I'll stick with the ATF. :)

We're hitting the motor this weekend, but I don't expect that we'll be in a position to try to start it up until Monday (not that I know what I'm talking about - when we have it done is when we have it done.) :) I'll throw ATF in tomorrow night (my next opportunity.)
Those who stored the motor were probably unaware of the benefits of oiling/ATF...

My motor already has atf in it. :)
