Arghh Why FC's WHY!???

I just swapped my motor and it runs great, but today I was on my way to class and I stop at a light and thing tranny wouldnt go into gear. I had put it nuetral while sitting at the light and couldt get it to budge until I jammed it in. Then it worked fine for a sec and at the next light it did the same thing. This time I couldnt get it into gear at all. The weird thing is once I got it into gear I'd have the clutch pedal in but the car would want to start moving, and if I didnt gas it it'd die.

To conclude I made back home cause somehow it started working normal for a min then I parked in my garage. I supposed to be in class right now and I need to get this thing fixed. Can someone help!?

Rotary_Knight 02-01-06 12:37 PM

excuse my bad typing I did it in a hurry

FCNAred 02-01-06 12:39 PM

sounds like your clutch hydraulics crapped up, try pumping hte pedal a bunch of times and see if that builds enough pressure to get you into gear. Does the pedal stick to the floor?

ikekrull 02-01-06 12:48 PM

Mine did this simply because the plate that holds the shift lever down wasnt tightened properly, allowing the ball on the shifter to pop out or jam in the mechanism.

I couldnt get it into several of the gears at all, though clutch pedal movement was normal and reverse would engage ok.

Took the plate off, reseated the shifter and bolted it down properly, and havent had a problem since.

Most likely the slave cylinder which is located on top of the tranny housing is going bad. Pump the clutch while someone watch's the slave cylinder to see if it's moving. If it's not, replace it. If it is moving and you have good pressure, then it may be the shifter or possibly something mechanical with the clutch kit.

Tournapart 02-01-06 12:54 PM

you're in luck! the slave cylinder is like the easier thing to change on this car next to the battery, i mean im sure you know this with changing the engine and all but, i thought i would just point it out because i think its awesome. Most things on these cars are a breeze to change

Rotary_Knight 02-01-06 01:05 PM

Slave cylinder seems to be just fine. I just checked that and I took it for a drive around the block and it did the dame thing. I had to turn the car off and then put it into gear to get it moving. When I restarted it in gear I kept the clutch in and the car was trying to move. This sounds like a slave cylinder but then again I looked at it and it moved just fine.

Oh also the throwout bearing makes a slight rattling noise now when I have the clutch pedal in. I figure I made as well replace that and see what happens. One more question what kind of fluid should I put into the shifter? Maybe if I change that it'll help or my dumbass might have forgot to refill it when I put the new motor in.

*I replaced the motor myself so I know a lil of the run around with this car, but I'm so tired of working on cars and I'm way behind on my classes right now that my brain is out of it.

Did you replace your pressure plate and clutch when you swapped engines? If not and you didn't even take a good look at them before reinstalling them, there's your answer. Go get a clutch kit. My 86 did the exact same damn thing, and it was the clutch. Came up to a light 1 block from home (thank god) and bitch wouldn't go into first as i coasted to a light... kept trying and trying.. no good.. Knew how close I was to home, locked that bitch into second and zipped around the corner thru the red light and down an alley.

I'm not sure the clutch seem to still have some life left. I mean not a lot but enough. But I will look into that. I think the tranny is still good though cause it shifts fine every now and then when the car wants to work right, and when the car is off it's fine.

Eternal_Gamer 02-01-06 02:41 PM

Maybe its the master cylinder or slave cylinder. I'd change them anyways with the Tokico replacements. I had the same problem, then I got the replacements and it was fine.

My clutch had life left too and it grabbed reallly good, but unfortunately, it wasn't releasing from the flywheel. That's your problem at the moment is that the clutch isn't disengaging. So your options are...

Master Cylinder
Slave Cylinder
Pressure Plate
Clutch
Throwout bearing

My bets are on the PP or Clutch. If you say you have a funny noise coming from the bearing and it just started, then it's probably the PP. Either way, for around 200 dollars you could replace all 5 of those parts. Granted it'll be a stock clutch, but the last time I saw the Tokico MC and SC were going pretty damn cheap somewhere (don't remember where). like 18-20 each? Search this forum for it.

Rotary_Knight 02-01-06 03:06 PM

ok will do!!! Yea I think I'm gonna replace all that stuff. I figured I might as well do it. I work at Kragen and can get some cheapo reman replacements that'll work. But I'll try to figure out where to get these tokico products. THANKS!!

This happenedto my friend on his 1st and 2nd. I think it's throwout bearings

RotaryEvolution 02-01-06 04:43 PM

you mean pilot bearing. the most important part that everyone forgot to mention. ;)

Rotary_Knight 02-01-06 05:13 PM

YEP cause the pilot bearing is destroyed!!!!!!!! I am not sure how I am gonna get that thing out there. All that there is left is the outer shell and some torn pieces. The throwout bearing was also in bad condition. I'm not worried about getting the new parts I'm scared cause I have no idea how I'm gonna get the bearing out of there. I have a little slide hammer but it is useless. I need some device that presses up against the bearing better cause mine doesnt work for anything.

rtking 02-01-06 05:20 PM

I second the clutch kit. My FC did the same thing. I would turn-off the motor then it was easy to put the car in gear. But once I started the motor, I could feel a drag on the clutch as the car wanted to creep forward. That's when I knew something was wrong with the clutch assembly. I had the clutch changed-out and no problems since!

yeah this crap is happening to my first gen and im pissed cause now i have to change out the whole clutch assembly that or find someone and pay them to do it....witch is what i dont want to do....but if i have to i have to....sucks

:AA:

Rotary_Knight 02-01-06 05:34 PM

See I dont mind getting a new clutch, but I am stuck on how the hell to get this pilot bearing out! I dont know what to do cause I had a bad experience with a pilot bearing before and the damn slide hammers dont work for s%^#! Sometimes they just make it worse no matter how well you line it up. argh!

RotaryEvolution 02-03-06 09:32 AM

go to kragen and rent their pilot bearing puller kit, get a propane torch and heat up the bearing and follow the directions for the puller and pop it out.

Rotary_Knight 02-03-06 11:37 PM

haha I work at kragen and we dont have s%&* but I went to another kragen and they had it. I didnt think of getting a torch though. I will try that out soon. It wont hurt anything else around though right? The other medal seems pretty tough in comparison.
