Anyone knows what this is?

So I'm doing weight reduction right now. So far my sunroof rack , spare tire, jack, tools and all of the sound deadening material is off. (except the one that needs dry ice) but I'm on my passenger side pulling out some cushion underneath the carpet. I see this thing....and I'm not sure what it is or what it does or even if it needs to be there...

any ideas? It reaches to underneath the car....its also close to my exhaust, and I don't want to say factory EGT.

89 GXL with a TII swap.

It's a sensor that warns you of an overheating exhaust.
Not emissions related, you can 86 it if you'd like.

demontwig 09-11-08 01:52 PM

Some say it doesn't even work usually :dunno:

2-N-D-pink 09-11-08 01:53 PM

I don't have any emissions (I live in Florida). Thanks though, that thing is out now.

I wouldn't doubt it...its alll black and full of junk on the sensor side.

j9fd3s 09-11-08 02:58 PM

actually it IS emissions related, when it switches to HOT the ecu dumps fuel, and the acv vents to the air cleaner.

i had one go off during an emissions test (car was missing the heatshield under the floor) and the hc's went from 100ish to 1000ish, co went from 0 to like 5%

if you dont care about tailpipe emissions, you still wanna hook it up so that the ecu thinks its cold, as the dumping fuel part will kill your mileage, and the plugs

or just leave it alone...

Well wouldnt the ECU think that the exhaust is fine if the sensor isn't there?

If the sensor isn't there to tell the ECU that the exhaust is hot, then the ECU will think that the exhaust temp is fine. I don't see how would the ECU will read a hot exhaust with out a sensor.

no. read FSM

NinjaGUYdan 09-11-08 06:03 PM

Yes read, or, theres a thing called the ecu needs a signal either way. The problem is this probably is not one of those "just ground it" things, it is most likely a resisted signal...... so yeah read the FSM

http://www.cochran-racing.com/FSM/s5/S5wiring.pdf

So when you go here, on the left side click on "N/A engine control" scroll down about a quarter of the way till you hit page B-1b. (you'll see it on the top right side of the page) There you can see how its a switch and not a resistor.

This isn't a problem at all. I wanted to know if i can pull it off. The car is running with out it right now. Another thing, its a overheat exhaust sensor. For my exhaust to be over heated, I would have to run lean. AFR on my car is at 11.7. I don't think that's very lean....and this whole time I had the car, I never seen that light ever come on.

I couldn't find something in there that said I cant pull it off...

This is like telling me that pulling the knock sensor off will freak my ECU. I believe the Knock sensor also dumps fuel add ignition and what not.

Bah. I didn't block mine off + I'm fine :tard:

clokker 09-12-08 12:07 AM

That was a rather crude way to block off the holes.
Junkyards are full of rubber body plugs (every car has 'em) that will just pop in and look OEM.

freemanrx7 09-12-08 12:37 AM

No more ac parts no more logicon. It might as well go to. Maybe guages?

yeah, I thought about going but the car doesn't have any seats and there's a bunch of plastics laying around...:) When I seen the washers and allen head bolt...it just kinda clicked.

I havent pulled the dash off yet. I still need to take off the heater core and all the plastic junk back there. Along with the logicon. I dont know what Im gonna put in its place. Once its gone theres all kinds of things to put there. CD player, gauges, turbo timer and boost controller, my Neo, or just cover it up with carbon fiber...Im not sure what im gonna do till I pull off the dash.

Hypertek 09-12-08 10:24 AM

whyd you pull the lap belts? you going cage +harness?

Not yet. I usually dont use the lap belt. I took off the motor for the shoulder belt and left the buckle bolt on. I will do a custom cage soon, but I think Ill get some seats first before I start. Does any one know just how much the stock S5 GXL seats weight? This seat is adjustible in too many ways for me. The head rest, the lower back, the normal foward and back wards movement plus another lever to adjust your lower legs...WTF!

Heres the shoulder belt.

I have never understood why people will rip out the insides of a car for maybe 50lb reduction in weight.

In a pure race car sure, but anything that will be driven on the street it just seems like a waste of time and you lower the value of the car forever.

I mean driving with another 200lb person in the car only make a little differnce to me (except when racing but as i isad, that is a differnt issue) what can 50lb really change that make it worth ruining a perfectly good car?

Really want to know.

Well I ran a friend of mine and his got microtech lt10s, 720 primaries 1000 secondaries, 8lbs flywheel, 3 puck clutch, upgrade weird stock turbo 3 " dp and exhaust. And made 254 hp with a bag of ice on his top mount. Then 246 with out it.

im also rocking a TII, except I have a stock ecu with a neo, 720cc sec, 6 puck, stock flywheel, 3" dp and exhaust. And i made 221 with a bag of ice on my top mount then 206 with out it.

Any ways, when i ran him...I burned that car bad. Constantly pulling every single gear. After he takes off his dash and everything he doesnt need, he took his car out to the dump and it weight 2550 with him in it...WTF!.

We ran 2 days ago and now his beating me. I can get him out the whole because of inertia (heavy flywheel) but when we get to 3rd...he starts pulling on me like im not moving. The only difference between 2 days ago and a week ago is weight.

Also, all sound deadening material, spare tire, jack, tools, sunroof, ac condeser, blower, sunroof rack and seat belts is way more than 50 pounds. I weigh 130 and he weighs about 190. Ill take my car out to the dump and weigh it then run him and see the difference. Reducing the value of my car doesnt bother me at all. I wont be selling my car at any time and when I do itll be worth more than the 1000 chassis and the 1900 dollars engine, ecu, drive shaft, harness, exhaust, air flow and map sensor. I think so far if, I were to include everything on my car and add the car, I havent reached the 3600 dollar mark. I think thats pretty good....

2-N-D-pink 09-12-08 02:46 PM

i forgot to add antenna motor, seatbelt motors hatch wiper motor and some usless thing underneath the dash...

KompressorLOgic 09-13-08 05:54 PM

:) +1 for striping the interior!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...c/UNI_0090.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...c/UNI_0091.jpg

never have quite got around to doing the sound deadening on the floor... pretty much got everythign else out tho

yeah ive easily lost 200+ lbs of weight

ive got 1 gutted car and one full interiored...

incubuseva 09-13-08 07:27 PM

Jeeze. At least take some WD-40 to the inside of it + clean it up a little.

Do you have your antenna in there still? The one that goes from the motor to the radio? I tried to take mine out but it's stuck somewhere underneath the floor in the middle of the car.

2-N-D-pink 09-13-08 07:43 PM

Holy shit dude....Im sorry but that looks like a trash can...theres no way ill strip my can like that. All my interior is still looks like stock. I took off things you really cant tell.

Ill post some pics soon...

drftwerks 09-13-08 10:37 PM

ahhah man i hate stripped cars now, haha, i grew out of that shit a long time ago

Wht90Rx7Conv 09-14-08 12:25 AM

My god. What a joke. I'm sorry man. I would never do that. Ok I'm gonna be helpfull as much as possible. Losing weight is good but you need to do it right, not just random. My brother races and car tuning is very important. Scales on every tire to see weight changes on suspension tuning and such. Check out this website, I hope it helps.

http://www.jdmenginesamurai.com/tune...d_handling.htm

If you replace the driver seat with a milk crate I'm sure you can lose another 30 lbs.
