Anyone know anything about the FC knightsports turbo?
 

I'm doing a S5 13bt swap on my first gen and ended up going the JDM route (bought it back in the spring) and it came pretty much complete, and was advertised as stock/original. Little did they know it has a knightsports turbo on it, with very little if any shaft play. Anyway, I'm sure its better than the stock turbo, just curious if anyone has any info on it, specs etc. I've been to the knightsports site a few times, but I don't know enough Japanese to understand most of it and google translator is useless. Best I can figure they have two options, a hybrid kit that uses the exhaust side off the S5 and provides a new compressor, and then a full turbo kit. Not sure which one I have, haven't taken it off the engine yet to inspect the manifold or anything. Just wondering what you guys can tell me about it. Thanks

hehe I knew that was coming ;) the only pics I have are of whats visable, the compressor side. The rest of it is covered by the heat shields and all that. After I hit "post" I kinda wished I had waited till I had time to pull it off the engine before posting this.... oh well, guess I'll try to get a pic or two of it.

well if it was a "full turbo kit" your exhaust manifold would be very different from stock(So I think:) ). Most likely it is a hybrid. I got a Panspeed hybrid and the person I bought it from at first was like, "this is a totally different turbo".

Ok I'll have to get some pics, like i said this is going in a first gen, I'm a first gen guy, never really done much with FC's until I decided to undertake this project, so I don't have much to compare to. I'll pull that heat shield off and get a pic or two.

Ok, was too rainy today to do any sandblasting on the car this engine is going in, so I decided to start pulling things apart on the engine. Whoever had this thing back in Japan put a Mazdaspeed clutch in it, among a few other things I didn't notice at first, kinda cool. Anyway, pulled the turbo off as well and I took a few pics of it, see if you guys can tell me what I have. The hot side looks too clean to be original, but who knows, other than few letters and numbers cast into it theres no brand name on it, couldn't really get a good shot of those letters, what does the stock turbo say in the hot side? Thanks guys.

Looks to me like a hybrid option.

The foot print on the hotside looks like the HT-18.


Very sweet find, its quite common Ive found that J-Spec importers often have souped up stuff that they re-sell as stock simply because they either don't know, or don't throughly check the new arrivals. Good deal.

Is what FC3S Murray said about the exhaust being differen't on a full turbo true? If so then it would seem that this is the hybrid, cause the Rb downpipe I got bolts right up to it. Either way I agree, it is a cool little bonus, as you said classicauto I don't think the place I bought it from had a clue about it. Looking in through the exhaust ports the engine looks clean, hopefully it will run, I don't have the money to rebuild just yet.

Yes, it certainly would have a different exhuast manifold. The HT-18 the car came with stock has a unique footprint and no other turbo will bolt to that manifold (to my knowledge...and at least none that would be considered a huge improvment over the stocker)

Therefore if it wasa full upgrade you'd have a mani. with a T4 flange and (more than likely) setup for an external wastegate.

There is no doubt you have a hybrid.

Ok, so now that we've determined I have the hybrid setup does anyone know any of the specs on this thing? What kind of power should I expect from this setup?

I know Panspeed , Knight Sports , R-Magic mild High-Flow turbines
have a T04b front side...

Ok thread resurrection time, where can I get a rebuild kit for this turbo? Its got some shaft play, and if a rebuid kit is cheap enough I might as well do it now before it gets worse and damages something...

The generic Garrett t3/4 rebuild kits will work on all HT-18 turbo chargers that still use the stock CHRA which yours most likely will.

mine could use a rebuild but i thought they were turbonetics? will the garret parts work?

There was a thread a long time ago that the poster stated he was able to get turbonetics to send him a rebuild kit, however someone else called them and they turned him down outright.

The CHRA is the same as a T3/4 Garrett turbo. The compressor side uses a T3 sized housing seal.

This site also sells the kit, but for triple the cost of the ebay one. Still trying to figure out where the extra cost is.

Thanks for digging this up! I was hoping I'd get more information on this thing. The engines in the car and I'm in tne middle of wiring it, so hopefully I'll know how things work out soon enough...
