Cheaper and more effective would be a 5 speed swap. Better shifts, and no more slush box.

Ask them why it fits the 88-90 when the 88 auto tranny was different than the 89-91 RX-7 auto tranny.
The 86-88 were the same though. |
Yeah, that kind of got to me too, but I think they listed the appropriate 929 years, and forgot the RX-7 years. I plan to task them a lot of questions, but assuming they don't fuck up, I want to try that kit. The only thing at risk is an automatic transmission. :D

I know a few people who can get TransGo stuff for really good prices, which is why I have instantly decided to do it. I know 3 Grand National owners, and 4 camaro owners who have had great experiences with their TransGo products.
I am going to order the custom Continental torque converter too. I would like to launch my car just once in its life. :rlaugh: I have already got raybestos blue clutches on their way in, as well as the rebuild kit. Screw the auto>manual swap. If I want a manual transmission, I'll pick up another car or a do a real swap, like a T56 six speed or something. I know that just about nobody will agree with me, but we'll let the results be the judge of things. I have also gotten ahold of a chip off of a friend that intercepts the transmission computer and hardens the shifts, so no more slipping into every gear and wrecking the tranny. level Ten has told me that our trans will hold well over 500 ft/lbs. of torque with these mods. Considering the great job they have done with a lot of Supras and domestics, I have no reason to doubt them. |
Great, can't wait to see how it goes. I have a base model NA that I paid $750. Its a daily driver, so doing a 5 spd swap is of 0 interest to me.
I just want an auto that shifts properly, it slopping through them now. Converter wouldn't be bad either...hmmmm. Definitly keep us posted on results. I know TransGo makes good stuff. I've seen/felt on of those shift interecpters before, on a Grand Prix, it really, really stiffens things up. As for Level 10, well, I'm kinda out on them, they didn't do so hot in the GP world. I still plan an auto>manual swap , but not on this car yet. I want to try the auto first, and if it works, I am going to put it behind a turbo motor in another chassis I have, and then drop a 5 speed behind the engine in this car. |
I just picked up the shift kit for $20 and a rebuild kit as well. The kit will take a week to arrive, then I will begin my work. I will let you know the results ASAP. I think I will just have to go to leven ten for the TC, because Continental does not make one for the RX-7. not a big deal.

My friend makes them for all ECT autos. These so-called shift improvers are nothing but an adjustable 2 wire resistor control. They just increase the amperage to the solenoid that controls the line pressure. Total investment for everything I am doing? Not even $200
Rebuild kit: $140 Shift kit: $20 Shift improver: $20 The TC would drive me over, but I don't really need it. Increased stall would just make the car less drivable anyway. The shift kit and shift improver will be more than enough combined with the PTS blue clutches. |

I just ran across this thread in my search for questions and answers on automatic S5 transmissions. I have an 1989 convertible, automatic. But it does exactly what that "trans-Go" description says. I bought the car as a project car and have been trying to sell it, but no one in Oregon seems to want a project car so I thought I might try working on the transmission myself and see where I can get. I thought about doing a 5spd swap, but then decided the labor and cost was high enough that I could just spend a little more money and get a strongly rebuilt automatic which was my original intention for the car.
If anyone is interested in 1989 convertible with working, but bad automatic transmission for $3000, let me know. I can't ship it, but if you have family or friends in Oregon that can pick it up, that works for me as well. Otherwise, can't wait to see how this Trans-Go kit works for you. If it works well enough, I will do that to help sell the car. Thanks and good luck. |

Just picked up a mint S5 auto for a DD and wouldn't mind some better shifting action. |
The s5 transmission is an N4A-EL and the s4 transmission is an L4N71B, both Nissan/Jatco sourced. I believe the N4A-EL has full electronic control of shifting and the s4 is mechanical. Kind of like the difference between a GM 700R4 and a 4L60E.

So this kit should work fine. I've done some valve body work before. It's tedious, but not to bad.

I'm not sure if it uses actual governor pressure or if that is controlled by a solenoid as well (using a vehicle speed input to the transmission controller). On the old s4 transmissions only the lock up and overdrive had solenoids; it was basically still a mechanically controlled transmission in terms of the timing of the shifts, like a GM 700R4. The FD has a more advanced electronically controlled transmission. |

considering no one has EVER mentioned how well ANY shift or rebuild kit has worked for these autos and basically no specialty shops want to touch them, you're pretty guaranteed you won't get the results you're looking for without reworking the whole transmission and not just a basic rebuilt or light modifications.
these autos are junk. there's good reason why 98% of the cars that rolled off the delivery truck came with manuals, because the auto that was installed was just a placebo for people who really wanted a RX7 and can't drive stick. |
For what it's worth, good luck. I suspect the results will be underwhelming but give it a shot.

I guess I could reiterate by saying I hope it makes a big difference.
I spoke with level 10 and they make both an upgraded valve body, and torque converter. They are way more expensive than I'm willin to spend. Though I would venture to say the valve body upgrade is likely just modified with the shift kit. |
a better alternative would be a turbo 350, a hammer to the tunnel and an adapter plate. much simpler to modify, an abundance of parts and a much more stout transmission that can slam the gears as hard as you want and won't hurt the burly transmission made for a much heavier car.
if i were to make a drag specific car that is probably what i would do, as the GM manuals are a bit more costly to swap in and air shifter trannies even more costly yet again. downside compared to manual trannies is drivetrain horsepower loss % where you will minimally lose out with a manual. |

I just swapped in another auto tranny (lost 2nd gear) that was supposed to be rebuilt. So much work and new tranny has no 2nd gear either. WTF! Doesn't matter how sloppy these trannies are I just wished they effin worked! They suck! Good day.
