Besides the plain boring K&N CONE air filters, are there any trick looking Air Filters out there?

What about those RACTIVE filters with the HEAT SHIELD thing around it. It breaths through the very top of the filter..is that enough open space to get good airflow? Is it really effective?

I have a blue Weapon R intake. The damn thing cost my $235! But it looks nice.
