Another Stupid Question
 

Umm... I realized the other night that the protector right before the steering wheel, coming from the dash is loose. Obviously it is just missing some screws. What are the screw sizes and what could the previous owner have been doing in there? This sort of makes me nervous but I don't really know. I just want to get it fixed so it doesn't wrattle around and I don't break it.

If you're talking about the black plastic cover, it's secured by at least one (maybe two?) (fine-thread) machine screw and a pair of coarse-thread Phillips head screws.&nbsp The design is actually a "clam-shell", as the bottom part "snaps" with the upper half.

... and when the car gets this old, the plastic becomes brittle, and the plastic posts for the screws break. You will see the screw holes (I think 4 total) if you put your head under the steering wheel. Most likely the plastic is broken, but you can see if you are simply missing screws once you take the clamshells apart. BTW, this cover is non-funcitonal, so it's no big deal if it is broken or removed.

The previous owner probably removed the cover to fiddle with the instruments, or possibly to replace the ignition switch.

Thanks for the help guys, it really isn't all that brittle so I am just going to remove like the one screw that is there and just go buy three more. So this should cure my otherwise dumb problem
