Another Speedometer Question

Ok I've been searching and searching the forums through the search so I have been trying to find the info for about 3 months now. My speed and odo. both went out, I checked behind the cluster and checked under the car both seems to be fine on the cables end. Before they went out I had replace my tires up front with 205/60/16s and my rears were 205/55/16 (used tire shop had nothing else and need them right then) my front diff bushing gave way about a week later:wallbash:. Now it would work intermittently from time to time and just stopped about 2000 miles ago. My question is could the diff bushing have caused the speedometer to stop workingand the tires being a factor. Or am i just over lookin that the cable could have gave lose inside the line.

well seeing how you say its connected and all, it could be broken inside the line, you could always just remove it from both ends and see if the peice pulls out, or just buy a new one there not that expensive. i had to replace mine the day i bought it

Well, the best way would be to Check it Under the car first.Unscrew it and while you have the cable in your hands, twirl the end in your fingertips, while someone up above looks at the Speedo. It should register,by making the speedo needle Bounce..If not then something is Going on at the Cluster.
While you have the Speedo cable undone at the trans, inspect the speedo gear for Wear, especially where the cable enters the gear.IF you have to,Remove the Gear from the Trans(10mm bolt, tap on the gear,it will Pop out with a little Tug).Watch for gear oil.Inspect the Gear itself.
That should cover alot of your Inquiry.

Ok

I was workin on my little cousins 91 Celica, Wrong wheel drive, today and before that I took him to school.(Sorry the story's out of the way but it works with this I swear guys!!! N E Way) I hopped on the freeway cause my car was running great today and was shifting at 7100 1st and 2nd gears to clear out the granny shifting I've done to save gas and money, and then out of nowhere my speed and odo. started workin for about a quarter mile or so, how do I figure this out it only works when it wants to. It seems when I beat on it to clear it out at times it wants to try to work cause I know I had to be going at least 50 mphs and it shot up to about 40 mhps than dove to 20 and back to 0 like it's been for the last 2 to 3 months but mainly at 0 mhps.. how do I know what to check cause like I said before it is in both places. I was going to do like misterstyx69 said tomorrow but I got more work for my other cousin and then his car again. I wanted to fix this problem before I go back home to Cali in a few weeks to take care of some business. I dont want any more speeding tickets on my way back out going home.
Thanks guys your advice is truly golden!!!

Make sure the cable isn't pulling out of the instrument cluster. Mine stopped working because it was pulling out of the cluster. Symptoms were the exact same as yours - it quit working and then would work all of a sudden. When I got home, it was easy to pull it out of the instrument cluster. Since it's a pretty tight space up there, I just pushed it all the way in and taped it at the firewall to prevent movement back out.
