Another Exhaust question (flexpipe)

hey guys, is it really that important to have flex pip in your exhaust system? guy at the muffler place charged me $120 for a test pipe made from flexpipe. he told me without it, me exhaust would start cracking. It makes sense but is it really this true??? The RB TB doesnt have flex pipe why should mine?? -alex

No you don't need a flex pipe. Those are only for fwd motors or motors that are place transversally. They prevent the exhuast from rocking back and forth when the motor moves back and forth. The rx-7 motor is not placed transversally, therefore the motor rocks from side to side, thus no need for a flex pipe. So all in all hes bullshitting you.

On top of this, the exhaust hangs with rubber mounts. The whole purpose of that is to let it vibrate and flex all it needs to so you don't have stress cracks or anything like that. If your motor moves enough to break anything with this setup, you have problems.

isnt flexpipe a bunch cheaper and weaker too?? seems to me he over charged you and tried to make you feel better about it

You should take it back, if he wont refund you, then you can complain to his manager. Almost always: you can get a refund. If that fails, write to their corperate office, and the BBB.

My test pipe was $20, but I tipped the guy $20 cuz I knew I would need his help again ;)

Thats not that bad really; my friend who owns an 87 supra paid $325 for a stock downpipe from the toyota dealer.
