Aluminum flywheel price?!?
 

Hey guys,

I need a flywheel, and want to get an aluminum one. I've been trying to see if i can get the full upgrade for under 480 or so dollars! the problem is purchasing the flywheel and counterweight and hardware, is too expensive! usually over the 500 dollar mark.

so far the best price i found for everything is a racing beat aluminum flywheel at speedmachine. Comes with flywheel, counterweight, and hardware for the price of just under 500 shipped!

does anyone know of a place that is cheaper?
i am working with a very tight budget as i dont make much money!
btw flywheel for 89-91 non turbo.

figure i ask before i bite the bullet and kill myself.

not really, they dont come with counterweights and stuff, after shipping purchasing another counterweight and all other hardware, i kinda land in the 500 zone going with new parts from mazdatrix (counterweights are hard to ID used).

A lightweight flywheel really isn't such a great performance item for a tight budget, and most people find it lousy for street driving and informal drag racing. It is likely that your money would be better spent on different car parts.

Spend the money on... suspension maybe? Is there a reason you want a lighter flywheel?

I used to have an 8lb flywheel on my old celica dd and I loved it. now that I have a T2 I have to shift all slow... I just like the lighter flywheel feeling, and it makes rev-matching for downshifts a lot easier. Also you can't argue with something that saves gas (even if its only a little)

An aluminum flywheel is not recommended for turbos.

It's not supposed to affect gas mileage unless all you do is accelerate all over the damn place!

RETed, why would you advise against the aluminum flywheel for turbocharged vehicles?

The only thing that might happen is it could break under track conditions... but that would only happen in a 400hp+ vehicle. basically they aren't quite as strong as a steel flywheel, but I have had mine for a few months, and I don't exactly drive like a grandma ;) no problems so far... and only heard horror stories from SOME people and ONLY at tracks, others seem ok, even at the track. I would go with it as long as you don't want to push a ton of hp at the track... but its really up to you.

As a matter of fact, the lightweight flywheel is one of the most productive upgrades for a T2 as the stock flywheel weighs from 26-28lbs depending on the model... If you advise against it you have obviously never driven a car that has one. Also the light flywheel speeds up the low rpm range w/o wasting gas!! And of course this also means your turbo will spool up quicker :ky: Now, for high hp applications it can be dangerous and a little less productive so you might not want the absolute lightest application. Anyway, i picked up an 8lb aluminum ACT and a Mazda counterweight for around 300 together. If you are a mechanic and are installing it yourself, it is quite the opposite of a waste of money but probably some of the best money you will spend in upgrades.

I couldn't have been happier with the results!

I sell the flywheels but not the counterweights.. if I could find a place that sold the counter weight I would offer them but the flywheels are not that pricey and a very good investment

cant u use a oem counter weight with a alum flywheel?

you sure can, find one from the same model automatic- S4 and S5 counterweights are differents balances/weights so are series dependant.

now.. what good would it be to me to put more money in my suspension when my car cant drive right now? you know... that feeling when you hear a POP, then you cant pull out of gear, or put into gear when car is running... and the clutch wont disengage, the pedal feels funny..., and... well you hear tingling sound when you move in gear (via powershifting and starting in gear) i think some damage may have been done to my flywheel...

yes my clutch blew apart at 8500 rpms... i think it is very possible that there is more damage than just a clutch lining falling out of place.

I want a flywheel, because I want it... because... i am going to do my clutch... and i dont want to say 3 months down the road "oh how about a flywheel upgrade?!" and pull my tranny again!

for now ... does anyone know a good price on this stuff? esp the counterweight, mazdatrix wants too much money (ctw + hardware = 200~ shipped?!?!, if the flywheel cost over 300 dollars, that would break the 500 mark.

Ay reason why it has to be aluminum? You can get an ACT Prolite flywheel for around 250-275, then another 125-150 for counterweight. Flywheel comes with new bolts. So thats 375-425 plus shipping. So well under $500 and you still get a flywheel nearly as light, but its steel, meaning it will probably wear better with a stronger clutch. Thats what I did anyway. I went Streetlite which is a bit heavier than the Prolite

Though I will never buy from RX7Store again due to nearly 2 months of shit from them. They have a Prolite, which IS aluminum. I thought it was steel. Its $265 and the counterweight is $125

Only downside for the price is the friction surface isnt replacable. But seeing as it probably has enough material for a machine or 2, itll still last you easily 5 years, and thats IF you drive it hard. So not a bad deal for the $$$

They have the RB kit with counterweight for $455 plus shipping. So still just under $500. Sorry, looks like thats about the best your gonna do. Unless you find a non turbo ACT, which Im pretty sure are out there, just gotta find them

too bad you're looking for an s5 clutch/flywheel setup. i have a racingbeat flywheel with 10miles on it that i'd sell cheap, but its an s4.

corksport.com sells the ACT XTREME lightweight flywheel for ~$250 i wanna say, not sure. def worth checking out tho

250 for an ACT lightweight Flywheel?..But Do they make one For the N/A?..I could be wrong but I thought ACT only made them for the Turboe'd Engine(TII).
