Alternator problem or somthing eles???

Well this morning i went to start my 87 TII and it cranked and started and noticed my RPM gauge was not working but i was running late so i drove anyway. After driving for about 10 mins the RPM started going crazy at the same stile my car started putting like it was running out of gas then died. Wen i would crank it it would star for a couple of seconds then die.

Note i just brought the car out of storage on Thursday and while in storage i would occasonaly start it every now and then and found every time i had to start it i need to jump it. When i brought it out for good i charged the battery and it started and ran fine till today idk what happen. A bad alt world make a car die and make gauges go weird rite?

Clean the battery terminals really well. Corrosion can build up after sitting for a long time. Get it started, and check alternator output with a multimeter. ~13.5 to 14v is what you want to see.

Would a bad knock sensor cause this to hsppen?

HAILERS2 04-18-11 06:29 PM

A low battery would cause symptoms like what you had. Check the output of the alternator when it's idling. You've a turbo so you don't have a volt gauge so use a digital meter. Cheap five buck digital meters can be had from Harbour Freight.

That the thing the car wont idle it starts for two sec then cutts off if i give it gas it trys to stay on it farts and all types of crazy shit then cutts off

Check the spark plugs for spark. If they're wet when you pull them out they might not be firing.

Well last nite i messed with it again i tested the battery with a volt meter and got 12.2 volts tryed to start the car it would crank but not enough to start it volts dropped down to 8. sumtin volts i jump started it and it started the volts was like 13.6 or 8 every thing seemed fine rpm gauge was work then it slowly got worse rpm stoped working again and the voltage on the turbo time started going down so i guessing its the Alternator and it runs off the battery then dies so i think im going to replace both.

Now on that note i see people saying to replace it with the FD Alternater what has to be done to do this switch and what good comes from it beacuse the are more money then FC alternators

PvillKnight7 04-19-11 10:11 AM

An easy test would be to recharge the battery, start the car, then disconnect the battery while the engine is running. If the alternator works, the car will keep running.

You don't need a FD alternator. I would get a used stock alternator. Should cost less than $40 with shipping.

I've seen some threads about using GM alternators but I haven't personally done the swap.

Is that good for the car tho disconnecting the battery while da car is running

PvillKnight7 04-19-11 02:04 PM

The battery is only used to start the car...and supply a little reserve for when the bass drops.

Does your lawn mower have a battery?

Rx7_Dizzy 04-21-11 04:32 PM

Well i replaces the alt and tryed ti start it and it wont turn over for nothing even trying to jump it. Somthing is sucking voltage i test it with the battery hooked up key offf 12.2 volts turn the car on 10.1 volts

PvillKnight7 04-21-11 06:50 PM

battery connections? battery?

djphonics 04-22-11 04:38 AM

i would clean up your connections to the battery, when the starter is engaged it is normal to see the battery voltage drop.

It is safe to disconnect the battery while the vehicle is running, as previously stated.

On a site note, it's not a wise decision to start a vehicle while it's in storage. If not ran long enough, moisture will form from the combustion process inside the rotor housings, and begin to rust them.

You may want to check some wiring as well, as mice could have chewed up some wires in storage.

MrGoodnight 04-23-11 03:34 AM

What about his trailing coil? If his rpm gage was acting funny and car started running bad wouldnt that be a likly culprit?

HAILERS2 04-23-11 04:10 AM

Swap batterys with a known good one out of another car. Not jumper but Swap batterys temp.

Running a engien with the cable off the battery results in a blown regulator in the alternator. Your problem is not alt related.

Rx7_Dizzy 04-23-11 02:44 PM

Yea I dont think so either but im gonna buy sum new sparks cuz the others r done and im going to buy a new batt.nd my trailing coils ard msd blasters put them no over a year ago

PvillKnight7 04-23-11 02:58 PM

change one thing at a time

bumpstart 04-23-11 08:23 PM

trickle drain issue is most of the time related to swapping the s5 alternator onto the s4 wiring
they are different styles of alternator that have different field switching signal set up

if you fit the alt ( s5 ) with parallel pins in its small wires you have to be sure the pin closest to the B+ is wired to the battery ( and not just the B + )

if you fit the alt with the T plug,, top of the T is black with white and must be wired to the ignition switch or coil

Please do not do this, it is bad for the alternator, when you disconnect the battery when the car is running the computer will go crazy seeing low voltage at the battery and maxes out the alternator, it stresses it, and could cause a voltage spike which is bad

No, you're wrong...and if the alternator is already bad, maxing it out for a few seconds can't hurt it...

Rx7_Dizzy 04-27-11 06:09 PM

I fixed it guys I replaced the Alternator and spark plugs and it runs like a dream thanks for the help people
