Alternator: Broke. Battery: Dead. Car: 40 miles from home.

yeah, i drove home from orlando today and apparently my alternator wasn't working. my volts steadily went down until i barely made it to my friend's house. it died pulling into his driveway. my blinkers stopped working, my car was missfiring at like 2500 rpms. to make it worse, i got pulled over for 16 over a mile from his exit. and i got a ticket too. fuggin sucks. it's like 130 bucks and i already did driver school this year. he said my radar detector was the reason why he gave me the ticket. then, after he's back in his car, mine wouldn't start, so i made him jump it. so now my car is at my friend's house 40 miles from my house and i need to spend 100 on an alternator, and even more than that for a ticket. all in all i'd say my day kind of sucked.

I'm wondering if my altenator is dying slowly. my battery is dead as hell, but the last time I got it to start, it was showing 14v but when I go to start it again, it would barely start. I'm replacing the battery this weekend, but I'm wondering if I'll have to get a new altenator as well.

BTW, how did you get pulled because of a radar detector. last I drove through FL RD were legal. I know in VA and DC they aren't but that's a long way from FL.

First off Ill sell you a good alternator for $40. I wouldnt spend $100+ on one of those shitty autozone rebuilt jobs because it likely wouldnt last as long as another stock one, which I have never had one fail yet.

Next, Id keep the reciepts of this alternator and work done, etc, or have your friend help you put it on. Come court day, take him with you. Explain to the judge humbly the reason you were hauling ass, that if you didnt make it to his house in time you'd be stuck on the roadside and your car might likely have been towed, damaged, or even ripped off. Show that you repaired the problem adn have your friend as a witness that he helped, and explain that you normally dont speed, etc. but you were far from home and had no alternative. If the judge still sticks you with the original fine then thye are a major ass. IT should probably get it reduced or removed totally.
