Put the voltmeter on the battery, then turn the headlights on. If the battery is bad the voltage will drop down very low. With a good battery the voltage should not drop below 11 volts.

When my battery died I went through the same thing. One minute it was fine, then the next minute the only thing that would work is my idiot lights, but the key had to be in the on position for about 5 seconds before they would light up. As soon as I turned on the headlights, nothing would work.

k so for the most part the battery contacts are clean, i wiped em off but i havent put the battery back in yet cause its been pouring rain all day here and i had to go to work/class etc etc, im gonna get a main fuse from my buddy; that was on my to do list, but as for the idiot lights, those dont come on either, like i said the car literally does nothing. but on the subject of voltage dropping, when i press my brakes sometimes i can see the voltage dip and my lights kinda dim a little bit but once i let off the brakes it goes back to normal im not sure if thatll hint towards maybe what might be wrong though, thats just something thats been happening since i got the car.

When you press on the brakes the brake lights obviously come on, thus putting a load on the electrical system. This is entirely normal, although it shouldn't happen to any great extent.

The Main Fuse sounds like a good thing to check. It's either blown or it's fine, so you only need a new one if it is blown.

+1. there were times mine wouldn't start and i had to call off from work. then 15-20min later it'll start right up. come to find out the battery was weak. best bet is to change the battery.

i had a safcII in mine and it would tell me the voltage when the key is in and have it on without cranking it. if you could do what he said and turn on the car and the voltage reads below 12v it's a weak battery

what he said. even with all the lights on, brakes, and hazards on, it should not drop below 12v
