Air pump?
 

Sorry to bug you guys but I can't seem to find what exactly does the air pump do. I was looking at the Haynes manual and reading up on it little bits here and there. Why does it pump the air right at the exhaust of the engine? It has something to do with emissions, i don't understand how it works.

it provides fresh air to the catalitic converter so it don't go poopy.

Air pumps are overrated, screw the enviornmet! When a piece says "DO NOT REMOVE" it make you want to remove it!

Oh yeah, get a duel alternator pully. Yes, you really need it when you toss the air pump.

You're in California so don't listen to those hippies! :D You need to have your air pump installed and your cats need to keep their guts if you intend on passing smog!! Those other boneheads don't have to worry about emmissions crap like we do. :(

I removed mine a week ago, where would i find the dual alternator pulley?

But we're gonna have THE TERMINATOR as our Governor soon (I hope). I still don't see anyone ever getting emmissions requirements removed from California though :mad:

Someone please clarify to me why you absolutely NEED a dual alt pulley with the airpump removed? Honestly I always hear why you need one, but never why.

Because after you remove the air pump you only have one belt driving the fan and it squeals

When does it squeal? I havent had an airpump for a year now, and Ive never had a dual alt pulley.

I thought it was because of slipage at higher rpms without the airpump on

I think you are both wrong. It is because w/o the airpump, there is only 1 belt driving the waterpump instead of 2. So if you are driving your car for a long time, the belt could start to slip and your car could start to overheat.

When I removed mine it squiled like CRAZY, almost all the time. Very annoying.

And the air pump is required to keep the stock cat from overheating, as well as on the S5 N/A cars, it is used to activate the aux ports and VDI.

If you are in CA ( as well as many other modern thinking states) you can not remove the air pump and still pass emissions testing, as well as there is almost no power gain what so ever, just removing it.

u need it to open the aux ports!! unless u can find something else to open them!!

I dont know how relavent this is to street cars. Ive never heard my belt squeal or slip, and my car has never overheated as far as my temp gauge can tell.

This might be true on high revving race cars that stay above 6K for a long period of time, but I dont believe it is absolutely "needed".
