air fuel ratio gauge problems
i just bought a Rotary Performance aftermarket o2 sensor and a Faze Air fuel ratio gauge. hooked em up and the car runs fine, everything checks out, excep the gauge is acting weird.
when i start the car it flickers at the lean side and then as soon as i hit the gas it goes to rich and wen i let off it leads nothing. after that everytime i hit the gas it just goes to rich. any ideas? |
thats the way its supposed to work.
the stock oxygen sensor is a narrowband and so is the Rotary Performance unit. anything close to 14:1 to 14:9 ratio will show up, anything other than that it just assumes rich or lean. what your wanting is a WIDEBAND oxygen sensor that uses a controller. |
so basically ur saying the gauge is worthless?
|
not worthless but is less accurate than a wideband o2 kit,i know people that use narrowbands and egts to tune a car but is way easier with the wideband unit

If your car is stock, with airpump and a working ACV, then you see LEAN at idle. That is as normal as can be. The airpump and ACV are directing air to be mixed with the exhaust gas coming out of the engine. That explains LEAN at idle on a stock car.
Driving along and then letting completly off the pedal, will mean LEAN due to the fuel injectors shutting off when the pedal is lifted while driving. The injectors come back online around 1300rpm if you don't reapply the pedal prior to then. Drive along and just barely let off the pedal and just the FRONT primary injector shuts off. For some reason that will indicate a bit richer reading on the meter. I've never really figured that one out. Seems it'd indicate a bit leaner. Oh well. Drive at a steady speed over say 1700rpm, and the afr should back and forth on either side of stoic, IF the 02 sensor is connected to the ECU and is functional. If you have a stock NON TUBO and read lean at idle, go to the RELIEF solenoid and pull its elect plug off. The reading SHOULD now read RICH. Put the elect plug back on and it goes back to LEAN. Not applicable to TURBO engines. For TURBO you'd remove the vacuum HOSE from the ACV and plug it. The vac hose that goes to the switching port on the ACV. Plug that hose and the afr goes RICH. Put the hose back on and it goes LEAN again. Normal. I really know nothing about Rotary Performances aftermarket 02 narrow band sensor, but a common BOSCH for twenty bucks at your local auto store will work just fine and dandy for years and years. In the first jpg pay attention to DECELERATION and in the second jpg pay attention to PORT AIR. Port air is air being sent to the exhaust ports. Just in case: the exhaust ports are prior to the 02 sensor itself. |
awesome! thanks a lot guys, real big help
