Air conditioning problem.........

Just wondering what might be the problem that my A/C would blow hot air all the time? Needs a recharge, or what?

scathcart 04-05-02 03:13 PM

needs a recharge, or your heater door is stuck open (a/c cooled air is blown over heater ocre and heated even though a/c is fine).
If it needs a rechrgae, something is worng. Expect big bills to replace corrded lines, filter/dryer, etc. These things don't just leak. Carefully inspect your lines and connections, look for oil marks on them.
Expect a recharge to leak out as well.

Just pull it and forget about it!!! AZ has such dry heat!;)

scathcart 04-05-02 03:17 PM

Agreed, but not what he asked....

Sorry, Captian Serious ;). I have a few A/C parts lyin around if you need em: Drier, a/c compressor, a few lines. If you need any of these, shoot me a PM!

scathcart 04-05-02 03:25 PM

LOL, dude, yeah, caught me on that one. I'm hungry, and I didn't get any action last night b/c the girl was too tired.
AND she teased me about giving oral gratification, and then I never got it.
Bitter?
"Yup, bit him too"
Oh well, I can forgive, and I didn;t bitch. Just a bit of a let down is all. She's cool, and I love her.

Sometimes I do take this too seriously.

Oh well. That you in the pic Rico05? Pretty funny none-the-less.

It COULD need a recharge. BUT mine did the same thing. with LOTS of help from HAILERS :) I pinned it down to an electrical problem --the AC clucth was not engaging! VERY simple rely replacement and everything was fine from then on...

You can seearch for my thread on it .... if it's still here

rico05 04-05-02 03:46 PM

Hey Sean, I am right there with ya! "If you give me a back rub, I promise I will do you a favor!!" Yeah right. Anyway, if the system is blowing, then I am pretty sure it is just a lack of refrigerant!! Check the a/c clutch wiring though. Make sure it is plugged in!!

scathcart 04-05-02 03:52 PM

Bwa ha ha ha! Thats the EXACT line she used.
"Oh, I'm sore from the depo shot (damn you guilt), wanna give me a massage?"
Can I call you my brother?

rico05 04-05-02 03:55 PM

For sure. "I want you to meet my online brother Rico!!" And no, the pic is my best friend being stoned. He is such a goofy bastard....

scathcart 04-05-02 04:21 PM

LOL.
Cool, brother ;)

You better believe they do! ALL A/C systems will eventually lose enough of their refrigerant to degrade preformance. A car system should last about 10 years if nothing fails and causes a big leak. When the sytem is recharged it will be both evacuated abd pressurised to check for any leaks. You will generally need a new dryer if it's the original one.
To check the if you need a regas, turn the A/C on and you watch the sight glass (infront of the radiator, little hole in plastic cover). If you see bubbles you need a regas.
The biggest problem is likely to be the type of refrigerant currently in the car. A lot of cars this age still have the now banned R12 in them. It's illegal to refill the system with R12 (if you can even find it), so it must be replaced with a more modern CFC-free refrigerant, usually R22. The problem is this stuff is not compatible with the mineral oil in the compressor. All the old oil must be flushed out and replaced with synthetic oil. Ring around a few automotive A/C places and get quotes.
Just rechecked the original question. When you say blowing hot air all the time, do you mean even with the A/C off? Might be a Logicon problem. Whole different kettle of fish! :D

How do 30+ year old chevy's and ford's still have the original coolant in them?
And most N.A. cars are now running R134a since R22 and R12 is soon to be illegal.
Most cars running R12 originally were meant to run for 30+ years or more.

How much would it be to get the AC system drained/flushed/whatever you do to it? Also, is it neccesary to pull the radiator to remove the AC system? Thanks people.

:dunce:

snoopster76 04-06-02 12:14 AM

if you decide to pull the a/c, on my buddies tii, i had to remove the bolts holding the radiator and just tilt it towards the motor. of course if you don't have an e-fan, you'll probably have to either watch out for trhe stock one or remove it to. take all of it out if you do.

FC3AZ 04-06-02 02:54 AM

thanks for the help guys, i think i will just get it all looked at and get a recharge at the same time......gotta have that a/c out here. it gets so nasty!

man, I am down in tucson, and my compressor wont even engage the clutch. Cant figure this out...And summer is coming FAST!

akageals 04-06-02 08:06 AM

J-Rat...the compressor won't engage if the system pressure is too low. You MAY need a recharge.

RICO...I have a leak between the line that connects to the condensor and the compressor. I've replaced the o-ring twice. One of the flanges must be cracked or corroded. Do you have the evaporator / line to the compressor. If so i'll buy it from you.

Todd

PS. I changed my system to R134 myself. Took me most of a day to flush everything and replace o-rings. Didn't cost much though....about $50.00 for everything I think.

J-Rat 06-10-02 12:16 AM

Well, I recharged it with 134a and it works like A CHAMP!!

How much would it cost me to change my 91 vert to 134a? I don't really know how to/feel like doing it myself, so I would have a mechanic do it. Are we talkin big bucks, or just a few bills?

Pretty big bills. I checked on this last week because my AC wasn't working and was informed by a local shop that I was looking at $300+. Fortunately I was able to just recharge my R-12 system for about $175. If your compressor is bad, convert to 134A because they'll probably have to clear and clean they AC system anyway. If not, probably just recharging with R-12 is the best bet.

There is a good troubleshooting section in the FSM for AC. You can find the FSM at http://www.fc3s.org/
