air condition removal
 

hello all. I have an 88gxl and my ac is not working. I have almost never used ac in any car I have owned and im wondering if its worth removing it from my rx7. How difficult is this procedure and will I gain any horsepower from this? any response will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance---Ren

Its not too difficult, a weekend job I suppose.

Gain horsepower? No. At least not enough to notice. The engine not having to turn that extra pulley may free up a tiny amount, but the big advantage of removing it is weight reduction, as well as opening up space in the engine bay so you can more easily access anything on the drivers side, ie sparkplugs. If you never use A/C, it is definitley worth it to pull it out of there.

You wont see any power (the compressor spins VERY freely when not engaged). However, you will drop 80-100lbs if you remove the entire system. Its pretty easy, just unbolting stuff.

I just did it about a week ago. It was not that hard but it took me a while to find all the lines ans bolts on the compressor because my engine was kinda dirty but it was pretty straight forward. I think it is worth it you will probably too when you hold the compressor(heavy biatch) it won't really give you any Hp gains since the pully that it is driven by is free rolling until you turn it on so since you never used it you would not notice the engine revs faster but it is a lot of dead weight you loose from the car I would say it is a good 15-25lbs. You also get a lot more room with the lines and pump gone.

Ok maybe not 100, but around 50 ;) I just thought about it. But mine was around 100.

ac core - 10lbs
condenser - atleast 25lbs
ac/ps bracket - oh... another 15lbs
ps pump (dont need it anyways :) ) - 25lbs
misc lines and crap - 5lbs

If you do this, please do the responsible thing and have the system evacuated properly. Don't vent any remaining R-12 into the atmosphere.

removing the evaporator under the dash is the hard part. I took mine out in about two hours. But you will need either the stock connection piece that came in cars without AC or a roll of duct tape. I chose the duct tape. Once the evaporator is out of the way of the blower motor you will get a good bit more heat out of your heater too!

Mine was already bone dry :( Is that a bad thing? :p: Hrm, I just removed the entire system in the engine bay, but where it enters the firewall I cut the lines to remove the bolts. Then took jb weld and filled the ends. Next Im spray painting the bolts black and thats good enough :)

I've been thiking of finally getting rid of my A/C too, that 50 lb weight penalty is a huge promise. Yea I gain a little hp, but the weight is really what I was worried about. Ummm...Aaron turn the other way and don't look while I'm working. I've never had anyone else work on my baby, and I just can't bring myself to let it happen just yet :D.
