Aftermarket Turbo install, ABS in the way!
I'm in the process of installing an aftermarket turbo in my 10AE - using a Panspeed tubular manifold and a greddy TD07-25A.
I mounted the turbo up and it mounted fine but the exhaust outlet is /really/ close to my ABS, and sure enough, when I tried to mount the downpipe they try and occupy the same space! So since I've obviously got to modify the downpipe, my question is this: how close can I go to the ABS unit before I'll screw it up? I really like my ABS and am NOT removing it, so don't bother posting that cos it's not going to happen. |
well i would say that if you are concerned about how close you are to the abs, that decision should be on you. Alot of people have to remove that in order on running aftermarket turbos and DP's. I certainly would not wanna risk frying the abs and having thjat puppy leak all over the engine bay. HAve you ever experienced that? Hmmmm.

well I would say the biggest factor for closeness to the unit would be the amount the motor will move...
what are you running for mounts? P.S. - is that turbo going on the 1/2 bridgey R.P.M. built for ya? |

Well, I think I'm going to try and move the ABS unit over 2-3".. I have nothing else in that area and it looks like it'll move, I might not even have to modify or remove the lines to do it! and I guess I'll build a heatsheild or something, along with using header wrap on the exhaust to protect it. I'm running stock mounts right now, going to be using UHMW plastic mounts shortly - stock mounts are pretty much there for the breakin, until I have my hands on the plastic ones. Then it isn't going to move at all. 2-3mm tops. |

I dropped off my S5 TII to Joe last night for a halfbridge as well...should be uber fun... yeah with some competition mounts you should be good, especially with the abs moved over a tad - you should be fine...........I just know that the factory mounts do diddly fuck all for holding the motor in place....a good hard pull can wlak the engine a good inch and half to the right side of the car...... edit: I'd recommend the MMR competition mounts from Ebay...great quality mounts and for the price they're hard to beat |

If it was my car, I would remove the ABS entirely.
As long as the turbo won't physically hit the ABS pump, your major concern is heat. Either wrap the pump, the turbo or both. Also keep the lines away from the hotside of the turbo to avoid messing with the fluid... |
Once I got everything in and bolted down the turbo clears the ABS pump by about 1mm... I bought a $50 roll of header wrap yesterday and wrapped my headers, downpipe and the turbo. I doubled it up in the section of the downpipe that's really close to the ABS pump. I am also moving the ABS pump up about 1", so it has a bit of clearance.. I may make it a heatshield too. I should have some pics of the whole setup tonight which I'll post.

I would suggest getting a custom exhuast manifold thats pushed the turbo foward a bit.

I do have an aftermarket manifold - the downpipe is what's hitting the abs pump, not the turbocharger. The turbocharger is sitting far ahead of it. |

you won't be outstopping anyone when the fluid begins to boil from the heat.
my suggestion is moving one or the other, as with most others i suggest moving the ABS or removing it. you may not like the suggestions but they do have a good point. a good driver can stop faster than ABS can also, btw(older ABS systems anyways). |

I dont have abs and I fit a full 4 inch downpipe in there with tons of clearance even with the support brace of a vert. I could have even went with a 5 inch DP and maybe 6. But yes I would ditch something to run a larger DP because that bridge is going to want to breath and a small DP or one with some serious bends will hurt that. I only had to use 2 45 degree bends in the entire exhaust system and it fits like factory.

I thought I had some better pics for you today but I just found out that you cannot take a picture of someone welding with a 35mm camera or it will expose the film. So all the pics look like I am under water. Kinda funny
But seriously you might consider going with a larger exhaust because your motor is going to be throwing out some serious exhaust gas pulses. |
I removed my ABS when I took my stock turbo out. It was near impossible w/ it in. Especially on a 100% stock car.
If it works, keep it. Mine didn't work and leaked, so it was definately out. Saved me 21lbs not counting the computer! PM me if you want a how-to on eliminating it. I also reccomend keeping it if it works. I've wrecked a rx-7 from having no ABS. d'oh -Ben |

Yeah, my ABS works fine or it would be in the trash... once again, the turbo clears it fine, it's the downpipe! I wrapped it about 3 layers thick in header wrap, it will probably be cool enough to touch on the outside now even if the pipe underneath is glowing hot. The header/manifold got wrapped as well. I wish I could wrap my turbo but I can't figure out how :) I'm going to relocate the pump about 1" UP and this will provide about 3/4" of clearance, after I get the car running I'll see if it does indeed get hot or not - if it does then I'll build a heatshield I guess. :) |
