Aftermarket alternator

Are there any? I know i can put an FD in, but where can I buy one?

I wanted to check out the prices and figure out how much i am going to need to spend.

Problem with my current alternator, is that when I have my stereo on (no amp, or subs), my headlights on, and my heater, as soon as I hit the brakes, everything dims, and sometimes my alternator belt starts squeeling.

I am guessing just way to much drain on such an old, already underrated alternator. So I am looking for an alternator that is going to put out a good amount of amps. I plan on having the Flex-A-Lite BlackMagic fan put in soon. So I want to be able to run that.

Thanks for any information.

why dont you try taking it to an alternator or battery shop and having it rebuilt with better amps? where my mom lives there is a shop that does it in cali

Rx7TyreBurna 01-11-07 10:02 PM

I might do that. There is a place like not even a mile away that rebuilds them. Maybe I can go ask them. Probably the best thing I can do. ;)

Follow up.

Is there a place I can buy rectifiers and brushes to rebuild the alternator my self?

I had my 3rd gen alt redone to my specs, since i am running 5000 watts plus a/c lights at night, so yes, you can have your alt redone, mines puts out 120amps. my stock 88 was also redone and puts out 90. but I needed more power :)

5000 WATTS WHAT THE HELL DO YOU GOT IN THERE!!!!!?????!!!!!!

dothacker 01-12-07 08:37 PM

he maybe got a kenmore freezer or something :P just kidding...

yeah cause 5000 watt sound system would be kinda hard to fit and WAYYYY over kill in a rx-7. a good 4 channel amp 300 watts maybe for the highs and at most a true 1000 watt amp and 2decent 10s or if you wanna get really crazy and do JL 13's would be insanely loud.

depends :) I have a 15 inch MTX hunder 9500 series sub, which can handle 3000 watts. I also have 6 Kenwood KFC-207 tweeter set that hold 280 watts. 2 bazooka 5 1/4 2way that handle 120 watts and last but not least 2 pioneer rear tower speakers that can handle 160watts. so yes Josh if you add all the numbers, you can have a 5000 watt stereo in a 7 lol. then again. I am deaf, but its a small price to pay for a little bump lol.

running also 3 amps :)

ZeroDrift 01-13-07 03:07 PM

Just because the speakers can handle that doesnt mean they use it. Most speakers use less than the listed Rms as asvertised. The peak power you have listed is all the speakers working at full volume and hitting only some note on your music. Basically it most likly wouldnt sound too well, as most speakers distort near thier limits.

nyc_scorpio 01-13-07 06:05 PM

you are absolutly correct, that is peak power for all listed items, I have yet to go anywhere near the total volume. But if I had too, my alt could handle it since the main topic was about aftermarket alt :) I would recommend go with a 3rd gen and have it redone to 120 amps

my car used to blow up the alternator all the time
what i did was get a fc alternator here in a local part store with life time warrenty, so whenever it blows up i'll just bring it to exchange for another one

There is a write up somewhere on the forum about converting to a standard GM alt...which would, in my opinion, be the smartest route to take. ANYONE can rebuild a GM alt, and not like the local junkyard / shop won't have DOZENS of them just laying around..

RotaryEvolution 01-14-07 03:25 AM

is a cheap autozone alternator worth an engine? bearing siezure can cause the belt to whip off and take out the secondary belt. if you watch your gauges like a hawk like most do then it may not be a bad idea but still it sucks being stuck in BFE with broken belts and a crap cheapo alternator with a lifetime warranty.
