AFM Wiring

Short and simple. 88 GXL N/A

AFM harness got hacked up. Colored wires were matched, but theres 3 black wires with red marks on them. Does it matter which they connect to?? If so, how can you test to see if they are wired correctly. Thanks.

After trouble shooting, we came up with this.

It seems the AFM won't open up while it cranks. We tried another AFM and it did the same. The car runs smoothly if I push the flap open and hold it open. When you hit the gas the flap opens more too. But when i let go of the flap the car dies out. Anyone know what this can be???

88 GXL

Thx

There's a switch in the AFM that cuts power to the fuel pump when it's closed. This stops fuel being pumped out of broken fuel lines after a crash. The switch operates the circuit opening relay under the dash. You need to check both the AFM and the relay to see which isn't working properly. The EFI chapter of the FSM shows you how to do this, page 4A-54 for the AFM and page 4A-74 for the relay.

Anything else besides that????

Have you checked the AFM and relay?

Could a vacum leak cause the flap in the AFM not to open up on start up???

Thx

like NZConvertible said, there is a very small switch inside the AFM. If faulty in any way it will not close the circuit to keep the fuel pump running. I myself have tampered with this and found that if you wire the two very left prongs, it will keep the circuit.

I know it AFM is kinda confusing and hard to work on. I just got a new one.

It would have to be huge.

Check the AFM and relay!
