AFM Question
 

Okay, I'm driving a 1987 Turbo II, and it has that big bulky Air Flow Meter, Mass Airflow Sensor, whatever you want to call it on the back of my air box. I was wondering if there was anything that I could buy to replace it with, or if I'm stuck with it. I was kind of hoping that I could find something that was smaller and round, so that I could put a cone filter on it, and maybe make a cold air intake, but my friend and I really don't know if there's any other style MAF/AFM that we could get to put on it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

i dont think you can change it out... im shure if you take out the side that goes into the air box its round at the end and you can place a K&N filter on it without a prob remember if im correct your AFM controls how much fuel to put in to match the amount of air going in...but take it out of the air box and i think theres a rounded end to it to place a cone filter on it

they sell AFM adapters to use cone filters. the only thing you can buy to replace it is an Engine management system. WHich will range you from ~900-4k dollars. Basically your stuck with it unless your willing to put out the cash.

You are stuck with it unless you convert to a standalone EMS or a carburetor. Either way you are looking at over $800 minimum for new parts, plus about $500 for professional tuning.

The AFM isn't as bad as you may think, and there are TII's making over 390hp with the AFM in place. The main restrictions in the stock setup are the computer and intake manifold, and also the air box to a certain extent.

This adapter will let you use a round cone filter on your square AFM:

What about the intake manifold? You (Evil Aviator) said that the intake manifold is one of the main restrictors. Can you buy replacements, and if so, where at and about how much? Thanks for the replys!

I don't know of any ready-made manifolds that work with the stock throttle body. A custom intake manifold is probably going to cost $800-3,000. Another option is to cut open the upper intake manifold, ream it out, and weld it back together.

Okay, I got an adapter for a cone filter, and it works great. But the only thing is, where can I mount the entire setup (AFM and all) to where it won't just lay there?

Oh yeah, what about the smog pump too? It's makin a weird little noise since it can't go into the air box now. What can I do about it?

The chassis would be a good place to mount it.

Measure the inside diameter of the tube, and get a plug-in "crankcase vent" filter from your local auto parts store. A zip tie or hose clamp will help hold the filter on the tube. You will also want to mount this to the chassis so it doesn't flop around.
