Add Coolant Light Wont Shut Up
 

i have a 1991 rx-7 turbo 2 and for some reason my add coolant light wont shut the hell up, it is full yet still comes on. Do ineed to clean the sensor plug or is there just someway i can completely disable the feature that enables the light to come on? thanks

Did you fill both the coolant neck and the overflow tank?

yea its all full

the wires is broken. fallow it till you find where it broke at. or maybe your sensor is dead.

well its not a constant it just randomly comes on maybe once a day or once a week always at random though.

Did you bleed the system properly? It can still come on even if its full if you have air bubbles in the system.

Also, how long does it come on? Its is brief, or for a long time?

its brief it only lasts a sec but its annoying

Either the sensor wire has gone bad or the coolant is not high enough.

My sensor wire broke halfway home from work one day and i had to listen to it for 30 mins. Sepultura could not even drown it out. 2 ways to fix....

1. Check the wire. Look on the wire itself for rips, gashes, tears, etc.. If the wire is shorting out it will make that buzzer go off randomly, thus annoying you and making you confused/frustrated. What you can do when the buzzer is going off is first, make sure the car is not running, but in aux power mode (stereo is on, windows roll up and down, cigarette lighter works etc...) and unscrew the sensor (with the motor cold of couse) and touch it to a grounded source like the frame and not the battery. If the buzzer stops when you touch it to something grounded then the coolant is low and u have to fill it up via the proper way to fill it.

2. Fill it up the proper way if u have not already. I may not do it the way everyone else does, but here's how i do it. First, leave the cap on the filler neck and take the rad one off and fill it there, then put it back on, loosen that screw maybe 7 turns and then take off the filler neck cap and do it there until some fluid comes out, then screw it back in, and fill it up the rest of way. Done.

Sounds like you have bubbles still in the coolant system. Search for the proper way to bleed the system and get rid of air bubbles. I think there are directions on www.aaroncake.net as well. Do not disconnect the sensor or disable it. Having it beep at you occasionally is MUCH less annoying than rebuilding the engine because you overheated it when you didn't know it was out of coolant.

A sledge hammer is your best friend. How do I know? Cuz I've done it: a few good ole whacks and she'll never buzz at you again!

well how do i just cut off the sensor i'd rather continuously check then deal with the buzzer

read man.... that is a baaaaaaad idea.... it is your friend and now temporary enemy. bleed it all, let it warm up while sittin there with the radiator cap off. Once the thermostat opens, my guess is that all the liquid will go *schwoop* and dissappear. then fill till full.

you could also do wat the corvette guys do and jack the front of the car up to help with the bubbles

Don't cut off the sensor. It will just keep buzzing. Try some of the things suggested in here and either replace the sensor with a working one from the junkyard (cost's less than $10) or fill the system up with coolant. I've done both of these things in about 10 mins or less in my front yard.

p.s. make sure the coolant is full first before replacing the sensor.

I agree turning off and disabling your sensor is very bad. You say now that you'd rather continuously check.

If it's air in your system it will only take a few minutes to warm the car up with the cap off and let the air out.

If it's the sensor going bad I bet it's the wire from the sensor that is getting ready to fall off. My sensor wire went bad on mine, I took one off a junkyard find but it wasn't in much better shape. Both of the sensors wires were worn at the same spot, coming right off the sensor. Heat and moving the wire around caused the insulation to break, then the wire got corroded.

I feel guilty already for telling you this, but the sensor will shut up if you ground it to the battery. I had to do this for mine till I got it home. Please don't do this as a "fix" cause your car is trying to tell you something, you should listen to it.

Don't forget to check the radiator cap and possible thermostat. I was driving an 86 gxl and the buzzer would come on more and more often, then it decided to just stay on one day. turns out the radiator cap was shot and it was sucking in air, thus setting off the buzzer.

I doubt that it is air in the rad. The s5 doesn't have the same problems with that as the s4 does.

Clean the contacts on the sensor with some sandpaer/wire wool. This will improve the contact point. After that check the wires, You proably have a bad wire. IF you think its the sensor find a used replacement and use that, it will be cheap and the chances of it failing the exact same way are slim. If you don't mind throwing money at it, a brand new sensor from Mazdatrix is $35 that will definatly tell you if its the sensor or the wire.

Mine turned out to be the sensor was leaking so my water level was always going down.

I had that leaking also. It was leaking through the dry rotted insulation and coming out the exposed wire.
