Acrylic sunroofs?

I am curious to see if there would be much interest in a tinted acrylic sunroof? It would be similar to the glass one with that has the bolts through it, could even come already painted black around the outside to hide the mechanism.

If you take proper care of it then it's pretty durable and if it does get scratched it can be buffed up easy enough.

How many are seriously interested and what do you think a fair price would be, not including shipping or duties/taxes.

DBookatay 06-06-10 08:14 PM

The price would have to be right for any interest from me...

TrboSpdAnt 06-07-10 03:01 AM

I think I came across one, a while ago, that replaced the hard-cover sunroof. Can't remember where, though.

Sounds like a decent idea; cost could be in question, as it is.

evoentertainment 06-07-10 03:15 AM

cost?

Rob XX 7 06-07-10 06:34 AM

I had one, it had a fiberglass framework that was adhered to the acrylic skin so that you had no bolts going through the glass, obviously this makes it more expensive.

Mine had warped a little bit from the heat the car would generate with everything closed up, maybe it was cheaper stuff who knows

Groshuk 06-07-10 12:32 PM

I'm thinking around $200 not including shipping etc, I have to source the hardware still so I am not 100% yet. I don't want to put a lot of effort into it before I know there is enough interest.

zeromage428 06-07-10 12:37 PM

how much do the glass ones go for? Im in the market for a new roof, i would probably pick one up.

RotaryEvolution 06-07-10 01:07 PM

fair price for a rectangular piece of acrylic with 4 holes drilled and a slight bend? about $50. you won't sell shit if you try to rip people off for $200, just a FYI. i've seen some full size acrylic auto windows sell for around that price..

people would be WAYYYY better off getting a true glass sunroof than buying an acrylic one that bakes on their roof and needs total proper care or else it fades and ignores the point of having a moonroof in the first place. so unless you give a good reason why it should be worth $200 then you're high.

Groshuk 06-07-10 02:21 PM

If it was a flat piece of acrylic then maybe you would be right Karack but you obviously haven't looked very closely at one if you think that would work well.

To fit the shape of the car properly it has to be heated and formed, which requires a mold and an industrial oven big enough to fit the piece in. Once it's formed then it has to be trimmed to size, holes drilled, masked, painted, a rubber molding glued on, remasked and packed for shipping.

Just a FYI, I assume there is something you know how to do and I wouldn't presume to tell you how to do your job so it might be good for you to learn to give others the same respect that you would expect from them.

TrboSpdAnt 06-07-10 02:26 PM

I was actually thinking the same thing... They're not actually FLAT; though pretty damned close to it.

Actually, I think if this went into production, $200(with or without shipping) would be a fair price. Like Groshuk said, we're not talking about a backyard fab-job... Not getting it done right and looking professional, anyway.

Lemme know if you need a guinea pig.

In his defense you didn't tell us that you have any kind of expertise with this, you just asked if we would be interested in such a product.

DBookatay 06-07-10 07:19 PM

$200 sounds good, since the rear Pacific ones sell for $600+

any limpdick can go buy a sheet of acrylic, lexan, whatever, and cut it to size prob. is it wont seal worth a shit and wont look worth a shit, maybe everyone should try asking the guy what his intentions are instead of whining about a price already

if your roof is almost flat then maybe your cars been rolled? BS! the rx7's roof has a compound curve to it,that means it curves in multiple directions,go take your sunroof out and lay a flat piece of whatever the hell you want, and i guarantee its going to stick out like a sore thumb and look like total crap

No shit.. REALLY!? I mean, I've only had one of my FCs for the shy side of 6 YEARS, my TII for 5 and my second FD inside of 10... You'd think that I'd've figured that one out, by now, but since you decided to go ahead and reinforce the point I was making, all I can say is thanks, tool.

What'd you JUST learn what a compound curve was? You must be passing high school math. Instead of appreciating the car, why not just go ahead and say something ELSE that everybody here, already knows. Yhe point of this was (here's a big word, you ready?):

SAR-FUCKING-CASM.

Secondarily, your post contributed (as usual) absofuckinglutely nothing to the thread. It wasn't a test on your ability to read or even a test on your comprehension of the topic, at hand.

Go back to the ricer board, Retard.

Don't know? RTFM....
STILL don't know? STFU.

go take your midol or pamprin or whatever the hell it is you need before replying on here you overly sensitive bitch, the guy starts a thread trying to guage some interest for this and as usual half the replys are bashing him for price before any details are even given, kinda like when someone puts up an ad on the clasifieds and people dont like the price

TrboSpdAnt 06-08-10 11:15 AM

:shakes head: Great argument.

Except, I like the price of the classified. So.... What relevance did your response pose? None. I expressed interest in the idea AND the cost without any excessive details needed. No bashing the guy for his idea or anyone else, until you decided to act like you actually knew something.

Which, in comparo, I can categorically GUARANTEE you're not saying anything that isn't known.

As far as who was doing what, when instigated by whom, I suggest you go back and re-read what was posted and the order by which things were responded... Perhaps that will give you an idea as to why I'm responding, to begin with.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to run out and get more 'Midol.' I seem to be out of ibuprofen.
