acclerated warm up not working?

Hey all, sorry about the dumb question. First off, I just bought my 87 RX-7 a few days ago. It would do the acclerated warm up when cold the first few days, (3000 then 2000 & slowly to 750) but now when i start it cold (about 85 degree outside temp, car sat over nite) it just goes to about a 500 rpm idle and dies, unless I tap the gas pedle, then it goes through the normal warm up. Any idea on why it suddenly stopped working would be greatly appreciated. My theory is starting it in reverse with the clutch in cancels it out, just wanted to get a second opinion. Thanks

Have you tried starting it in neutral?

You're correct. Starting it in any gear cancels the 3000 RPM warmup.

Most people here seem to prefer doing that anyway - something about 3000 RPM on a stone cold engine doesn't make a lot of engines very happy, and it's purely an emissions thing to warm up the cats.

like Syonyk says, its an emissions thing, and not really that good for the car. i usually start the car in neutral, wait til she goes up to 3, then blip the throttle a bit till she drops down to around 1500-ish. then i let her sit for awhile while i go get dressed for work :D by the time im back, she's pretty much warmed up and purring at 750 like a good little girl.
if your going to use the start 'er up and walk away method-make sure you do it in a well ventilated area! :bigthumb:

My three cents (inflation, ya know)...

Way back when, I tried to kill my 3K warmup by removing the air bypass valve because of everyone on the forum saying it was "bad" to do that to your engine. Found out that if your air bypass valve is gone-gone, the ECU will just use the BAC to do the job, lol...

The Mazda engineers must have also had concerns about the "stone cold" thing. That's why the system won't kick in if the rad temp is below 60*F. My O2 sensor warms up much quicker with it, and 3K rpms with no engine loads is nothing on a rotary, especially one that's premixed.

So, I enjoy mine now. 17 seconds of listening to a rotary hum, put it in gear, and go...

When i start mine in gear it still goes through the 3k warm up.

mine takes longer then 17 secs..if by 17 secs you mean how long it takes to reach the 750 rpm after the 3k rpm start up...mine takes around 1-2 minutes..think something is wrong?

I believe he's talking about 17 seconds of 3000 RPM before it drops back to the mechanical "high idle" of around 1200-1400 RPM. It'll take a few minutes to warm up enough to drop down to 750.

I should give the 3000 RPM warmup a shot. My mechanical high idle is currently disabled and sitting in a bag in the back of my car due to a coolant line blowing - I couldn't get the correct lines locally, so I had to bypass the throttle body. As nice as *having* to heel-toe when the engine is cold is... I miss my high idle.

i want to take mine off...but according to people here starting the car in gear should get rid of it...mine doesnt lol

I would venture to guess that you need to check out your neutral switch on the tranny, then :)

or just give it a blip of the throttle. ^^
