Any FC non turbo rear end will bolt right up.

bingoboy 03-21-04 08:07 PM

the only S5 NA that had an LSD was the GTUs. best bet would be to find an S4 GXL one.

Psygnosis7 03-21-04 08:26 PM

I've heard you can also take the LSD from a Miata.

Yes.

Tofuball 03-22-04 06:41 AM

Well, the whole pumpkin from a Miata cant bolt in, but all the FC non turbo ones can.

For the Miata, you swap out the carrier and some. (Theres a post about it somewhere here)

Yes, that was me :

great thanks for the info what about the 4 piston brakes? will they swap over to the non 4 piston cars?

Tofuball 03-22-04 09:53 AM

As long as it is a five lug, I belive.

Might want to search on it though.

I know that some of the ?AE92? corolla guys want our breaks cuz they bolt on :D

WOOT!!! I love my big brakes!

the 89-90gxl didn't they have an optional lsd?
What car is better to get the lsd from? gear ratios better?

Tofuball 03-22-04 01:49 PM

The "GTUs" has 4.3 ratio gears and a Viscus LSD. But those are hard to find.

All the other LSDs are 4.1 ratio, as far as I know.

Nope, only 86-88 GXLs had the LSD. The only S5 N/A to come with an LSD was the 89-90GTUs. The GTUs also had the 4.3 gear ratio, whereas all other coupe 5-speeds had a 4.1. You can get a 3.9LSD from an LSD equipped auto also.

can i bolt in a 86-88gxl lsd in my 90 gtu?

Yes..as I said earlier, any non-turbo read end will bolt right up. And the LSD units themselves are swappable, if thats what you are asking, but I wouldnt suggest doing that. Just get a LSD rear end and swap it with yours.

Great thanks i just got into the rx-7 thing 5 days ago when i got my car. and am trying to get as much info as possible before i start to mod.

I have a brand new S4 lsd unit, when I install it in my 90 GTU, are there any seals or anything I should replace at the same time? And can someone explain some of the terms involved? Like is the pumpkin the whole case and everything, etc...

-Ben

tt1320flyer 03-22-04 02:20 PM

ya the pumkin is the unit that houses the ring and pinion gears as well as the lsd/spider gears. the pumkin has attachments for the driveshaft and axles.

Tofuball 03-22-04 02:22 PM

If nothing is leaking and you arent pulling the differential apart, you most likely will not have to replace a seal.

If you pull out the half-shafts for some reason, then just replace the side seals that surrounded them.

CRXtoRX7 03-22-04 02:51 PM

well I just have the lsd unit, I will have to open the case to pull out the open diff. and put the lsd in. still no seals to replace?

It might not be a bad idea to replace the seals on the side of the housing, where the shafts protrude from. Even that isnt "necessary" though. Ive done it a few times and they havent leaked. But other than that, aside from some RTV around the circumference of the housings when you put them back together, there is nothing else that needs replaced.

tt1320flyer 03-22-04 05:14 PM

i would take it to a transmission shop you trust because if you mess up the ring and pinion when you set the backlash by shimming the gears back together. if you do it wrong you can kiss the lsd/ rear end good by.
