89 NA Start .... Die
 

Well,

Working on an 89 NA Convertible and had to replace all the omp lines then put the rest of the motor back together from the previous owner. Replace some brittle vaccum lines and such while I was under there.

Well, now the car cranks for about 5 secs. or so then it will start, rev around 3-4k and then immediatly die. Then on restart it again takes a bit to start but starts up, hits around 1k then dies.

I was throwing a TPS code but once I adjusted it that went away after clearing all codes.

Now I am throwing these codes:

9 (Water Thermosensor - This plug was missing totally. The wire is there but the plug is not so I know why that code is there.

33 (Solenoid, Port Air Valve) - Not sure why it would be throwing this or if this could cause anything wrong with the starting issue.

Other than that ther are no codes. Any ideas?

AFM plugged in?

the thermosensor will cause a really lean condition when cold and cranking, it will not want to idle at all without that sensor active. fix that first and the problem will likely disappear after.

lol, yeah the AFM is plugged in. Checked that over and over since I did that on my T2 once and thought I blew the whole thing.

Wow, I didn't think that thermosensor would play that big of a role. Can I just find one off here and just splice the two wires back together vs having to find a new harness?

yes, you can even modify one of the S4 universal injector clips to work, just cut the alignment notch off the sensor and you should be good to go.

im a noob where is the afm at?

AFM = Air Flow Meter

In the top part of the 2nd gen section there is a FAQs. It gives a long list of all the terminology.

I say fix the sensor and make sure all vaccuum lines are on. It could be the sensor, yet I've seen vaccuum leaks do the same thing.
