89' GTUs w/ 87' Turbo II Swap (Build Pics)

Hey guys,

I joined this forum a while back and I said that I was going to do a swap of some kind and that I would take pics of the build.

Keep in mind that I am a 20 year old student with a part time job with a baby on the way. (Its my fault I know, so please dont flame me for smashing without a condom.) Thanks

Anyways, I wanted to a do an RE or REW swap but funds were cut due to the issues I stated before.

So here it is...

This is what it looked like the day I bought it -

So, I started to rip the motor out -

Who needs a cherry picker if your as big as me? Ha (235 and 6' 2") Ohh and for you fat people flamers, I do fit in the car.

Thats it for the tear down pics, let me upload the clean up and swap pics.

Th3_St33z 04-29-10 02:28 PM

So I picked up this 87' Turbo II swap from a guy locally for $400 and some parts off of a carb'd 13b I had. -

I also ordered some parts so I can swap the stock blow off valve for an HKS SSQV -

I forgot to get pics of the clutch and pressure plate before I installed it, I was in a rush before it rained but I got a picture offline, Its just a stage 1 Exedy organic clutch. -

Engine bay priming, and painting on a budget next...

Th3_St33z 04-29-10 02:29 PM

Ohh and my crank angle sensor does have a cover but Im painting it at the moment.

Th3_St33z 04-29-10 02:39 PM

Ok so I went off to discount auto and picked up some dupi-color primer and paint. I know this is ghetto but it looks better than the McDonald's theme that I had going on. -

http://i1035.photobucket.com/albums/...ff/Primer1.jpg

http://i1035.photobucket.com/albums/...ff/Primer2.jpg

I waited a day to let it all dry, sanded it a bit over the rough spots and then painted. -

http://i1035.photobucket.com/albums/...ff/Gblack2.jpg

http://i1035.photobucket.com/albums/...ff/Gblack1.jpg

I just realised I took these out of sequence... I pulled the tranny after painting and then added it to the Turbo II block from the previous pictures. (In case you guys were wondering.)

I had to wait a week before I could do anything, my wife wanted a dog so we had money go out in shots and meds for it...

Its a male Merle Catahoula with one brown eye and one blue eye (also known as a glass eye) - Names "Duke"

Swapping the motor will be next...

Th3_St33z 04-29-10 02:52 PM

Motor swap day -

http://i1035.photobucket.com/albums/...f/87turbo3.jpg

Then I added the intercooler -

http://i1035.photobucket.com/albums/...f/87turbo1.jpg

Well, that is all I have for now... I am currently waiting on some more parts to arrive, and while I do that I am hooking up the new ECU and wiring harness.

I am thinking about re-taping the harness because the current one is pretty rough and I want to heat proof it as much as I can.

If you have any questions or maybe some advice for my build let me know.

Thanks guys and I will have more soon.

Looking good. Are you planning on having the exterior paint redone?

Th3_St33z 04-29-10 03:01 PM

Thanks man, thats the kind of inspiration I need. Ohh and yes I am going to paint it, but I plan on having it done professionally.

Good attitude! Do you know the sex of the baby? And when is the due date?

Th3_St33z 04-29-10 03:14 PM

Its a girl, and she is due August 12th. Im excited and nervous at the same time, not really sure what to expect. It seems sometimes its hard enough to take care of yourself much less someone else. Ha

Haha, congratulations. You'll learn and adapt as you go along I'm sure, just like everyone else.

Th3_St33z 04-29-10 03:39 PM

Thanks man, I appreciate it.

Hey just had two Question about the build:1. Why does your trans look like an N/A one instead of the turbo trans. 2. You sure you got a GTUs and not a GTU/GXL? Other then that the build dont look to bad.

K-Tune 04-29-10 05:15 PM

it looks like an N/A trans because it is one...lol i think he's just using 100% n/a drivetrain.

sunroof on a GTUs? also did you swap out all your engine sensors/injectors? which harness are you using?

also you may want to replace that turbo oil return line..those welds look like ass.

j9fd3s 04-29-10 05:34 PM

cool thread! i like the yellow, but the engine bay looks much much better unmacdonalds...

enjoy the kid, they are kinda fun

Th3_St33z 04-29-10 06:06 PM

Thank you all for your replies, I was told the car was a GTUs and didnt believe it so I ran a carfax and also had the VIN number verified online.

I have no clue on the trans, I was assuming that because the GTU and GTUs models came with a TII trans that this was a TII trans, but if you guys are sure then I guess Im in the market for one.

As far as I know the injectors were replaced (they look brand new) and its an n332 ecu and wiring harness out of the TII car that the motor was pulled from.

As for the turbo oils lines I plan on it, I just want to get the car running first.

Thanks

K-Tune 04-29-10 06:40 PM

the N332 computer and harness will not plug into your cars chassis harness...

GTU nor GTUs come with TII trans...only turbo cars have a turbo trans.

also your motor is kind of strange...i see S5 turbo and fuel rails, N/A S4 water pump housing, and an S5 tps bracket?

Th3_St33z 04-29-10 08:08 PM

It was rebuilt by a local mechanic and it is an s4/s5 motor, the motor runs and has no issues.

At least it did 3 weeks ago when I watched him pull it from his car to put in a 20b, it has less than 20k on the rebuild with "Aviation" Apex Seals, etc.

K-Tune 04-29-10 09:06 PM

do you realize your harness situation yet? go and try to plug the N332 ECU into your cars chassis harness..lol you will either need to install ALL S5 electrical components onto the engine and use an S5 harness/computer OR splice an S4 chassis plug into your chassis harness in order to use S4 electronics..

stuwk1 05-05-10 05:45 PM

hey uh when you swapped it you didnt have to do anything with the mounts right? the turbo ii mounts and the N/a mounts are the same?

Annnnnnnnd this is where the "build thread ends" lol

Found car in local junkyard today. It's not a GTUs- was a GTU originally-- Sunroof, non T2 seats, open diff, single piston calipers on 5 lug hubs, etc.

Bummer!

Landon303 09-16-12 06:19 AM

I might as well mention it had a ford v8 in it too, incase you guys wondered how the t2 went. Haha

clokker 09-16-12 06:43 AM

That's sad.
I think a lot of people underestimate the scope of even a modest restoration (as opposed to swaps and other exotic shit)...the myriad and seemingly unending details can quickly become overwhelming.

I could see trouble coming at the engine bay "repaint" stage.
I've never understood why, if you're going to the trouble of stripping the bay, people don't actually strip it ALL THE WAY. Another hour or two and the brake booster, EM harness, etc. could have all been out instead of trying to work around them.

Oh well.

I agree. haha. Big pet peeve of mine when a few parts are still in there.

& I don't have the heart to scrap any. I actually bought an '86 a few months back- didn't want the car, but if I didn't buy it, code enforcement was sending it to the scrapper. So I got it just to prevent that.
