89-91 shift knob removal
 

How do you get the darn thing off?

As opposed to the 86-88, there isn't a visible retaining nut at the bottom of the knob.

I tried turning it, but didn't want to force it if that wasn't the way to remove it. Are the threads normal or reveresed?

I realize this is a lame question, but I don't want to damage anything taking it off.

j/k I think its pretty cool that someone cares enough about their car to post a question like that. Mine just turns off, counterclockwise. Its possible the threads are stripped or maybe someone cross-threaded it last time it was off. that would make it extremely tight, but I would think the damn thing would split before it got that tight, its plastic afterall. Your best bet is just to force the thing off me thinks. If its cross-threaded the damage is already done.

The knob just turns off. I'm not sure about using force in any case, but sometimes it can't be avoided.
On another note, is it really necessary to display open brands of sarcasm or downright boorish behavior? That comes with the big list, but it seems that for the most part, people here genuinely try to help. Besides, it turns people off to the rest of the message you're trying to convey. Go ahead and flame away if you must, but it really doesn't affect the tenor of this message.

make sure its in Neutral when u do it. cuz theres a groov on the shifter ball. that corresponds w/ a pin on the shifter hole. if its in gear, the groove is at a shallow point and u could damage the groove. when its in neutral, its got the locator pin in the deepest part of the groove, and the least risk of ruining the shifter ball.

someone already F-d mine up, its nicked and has a notch taken outa the groove, so when its in fifth, it gets lockd WAY up there if u jam it too hard. it probalby helped eat away the original bushings too. *Shrugs* oh well
