88 rx7 runnig hotter

So I have an 88 rx7 and its running much hotter than normal. When I got the car it was running a bit less than half to a half. Now its running 3/4 of the way. It doesn't overheat but its never done that. I was told it could be my fan clutch but I don't know how to properly check it. I was going to do a t2 swap later on and was thinking of converting it to an electric fan. I was told I can use one from a Taurus but don't know what year. Help is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance

Likely the clutch fan, stop running it with it running hot , get another clutch fan, Efans really aren't needed unless you're using it to free up space for intercooler piping etc.

A new thermoclutch is $250.

My entire efan set up (fan/shroud/controller) was under $50 from a junkyard (and would be @$200 if purchased new) and pulls more air with more precise control than the stock arrangement.

An efan may not be "necessary" but it is desirable.

Go electric. This is Florida and unbearable heat come summer as you know.

Pulls more air is matter of opinion, you're drawing more power from an already overloaded system.

Unless you have tests measuring the differences in a Controlled environment I beg to differ.

A stock clutch fan pulls plenty of air and can be bought for 20 dollars used, a badly installed Efan will just cause u more problems and again it's not needed....but if it makes u feel better having one go for it...

Why would you replace one old used part with another old used part?

And why assume that an efan will be badly installed, it's actually quite simple.

wthdidusay82 02-27-14 07:31 PM

Because its as simple as unbolting 4 bolts and rebolting them in, there's no reason for am Efan and you can't always expect everything to go perfectly.

The stock fan works fine , I've run them on all my fcs.

Running an Efan isnt needed, I run a used part because it's proven and works, that's why mazda put it there., testing the fan is as simple as testing it's resistance by spinning it with your hand, if it has no resistance spins freely it's no good.

Why make more work out of something that's not necessarily needed ne , the stock fan pushes 2500+ cfms.

I have have a Efan sitting around collecting dust because I'd rather use a clutch fan, if you think you're getting more power by removing that rotating weight it's probably less than 1 hp

Which I assume also applies to purchasing used thermoclutches.

When the clutch is within spec and the shroud in place I agree, the stock fan is fine.

OK, two things.
No one has ever said an efan was "needed", it has been presented as a viable option when a failed fanclutch has been diagnosed. Nor has anyone but you made a case for "extra horsepower" (although I can make a pretty convincing argument in the efan's favor, if you'd like).
It's disingenuous to play the "Mazda knows best" card when your whole car is full of upgrades and mods.
I'm curious why you're hanging your hat on this thermoclutch thing when you've merrily binned all sorts of Mazda designed parts/systems in favor of aftermarket.

Can you provide a few reasons why the stock fan is BETTER than an electric?
You keep saying the efan is not necessary, so convince me the thermoclutch is.

wthdidusay82 02-28-14 06:36 AM

Not gonna sit here arguing over fans.

I like the simplicity of using the stock fan if it works for my application, I see tjere bwing more potential problems being run into from a bad install with a electric fan, so logically to me it makes no sense to get an Efan if the application doesn't require it.

clokker 02-28-14 07:34 AM

Well, if you don't want to argue about fans, quit making sweeping statements like "electric fans aren't needed".

The only "need/requirement" the cooling system has is for "X" amount of airflow and it's completely neutral about how the flow is generated...mechanical, electrical- the coolant doesn't care.

You cite the simplicity and performance of the thermoclutch, both of which are completely valid points but then go off the rails again with the totally specious "bad install" scenario.
Fer crissakes, the improper installation of any part can cause problems...that didn't stop you from installing a Walbro, did it?

There is nothing inherently difficult about installing and wiring an efan, the forum abounds with different methods/approaches, yet you assume failure is the likely outcome.
For some reason.

wthdidusay82 02-28-14 07:56 AM

Well this is because I've seen failure..not by me but someone else..A badly installed Efan shroud/Efan will cause the car to overheat...

As where installation of of a clutch fanis straight forward, although some make make the mistake of not using the fan shroud..then others never bother using their undertray...In winter it may not affect anything but on on a hot summer day , no Bueno on no shroud /undertray

archaphil 02-28-14 08:15 AM

holy hell boys, not even 8:00am here and we are already fighting over trivial drivel.

I am not running either, I run liquid cooling cells powered with solar panels on my gt wing....

Got it for free from a warehouse that said "n.a.s.a" onto it.

clokker 02-28-14 08:18 AM

Not to be combative but the undertray makes no difference in my running temps.
Summer, winter, on, off...doesn't matter.
I don't dispute the efficacy of trays in general, but the OEM Mazda part is more of a splash protector than airflow aid, IMO.
