88 10th ann smoking at idle..alot
 

as title says my 88 turbo 10th ann is smoking at idle only and it is oil. does not smoke at all when driving. the longer it sits and idles the more smoke. i have researched this and i am currently running no pcv system and have both nipples vented to the atmosphere, have even tried capping the lower nipple on the center iron but no differences. any help guys?:icon_tdow

generally smoking at idle only is caused by worn out turbocharger

would it not smoke under wot and driving if it was the turbo?

Only smoking from exhaust? Or your open pcv tubes too?

no, it has to do with the turbo not spinning fast and not much exhaust back pressure on the exhaust side of it. and a worn seal in the turbo.

at idle, oil pressure of the car is higher than the pressure of the exhaust gases, so the worn seal will let oil find its way out into the ehxuast.

when on the throttle there is a lot of exhuast gas moving, so it keeps pressure against it and oil d oes not leak past.


is this a stock turbo? this can occur in aftermarket turbos if there is not an oil restrictor in the feed line, too high of idle oil pressure= oil pushing past, or kinked or undersized return line.

a turbo can smoke at w0t as well but ususally that is when they are reallllllly bad...

It is a bnr stage 4 turbo with stock oil lines for feed and return

I'm running a bnr stage 4 also. No issues here.

You can pull the downpipe and inlet duct to check for oil. A turbo leaking enough to smoke should show some oil where there shouldn't be.

I seem to recall the stage 4s may require an oil restrictor. Best do a quick search to verify and check with Brian.

I'm running a braided steel for feed, and return. May be coincidence that mine doesn't smoke.
